New Logo is cancelled The official letter from Mark Hollis:

    Dear Alumni Leaders:

In a letter to Spartan Nation, MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis announces MSU "will use the current Spartan logo design, first used in the late 1970s, to build our visual brand identity." Please share this information with alumni in your area. Thank you.

    Feb. 5, 2010

We Gather and Engage Our Community to Teach, Support, and Celebrate our Student-Athletes in Their Quest for Excellence!

That's the mission I had in mind since day one. But it can't be done alone.

Our vision of a "consistent and national identity" was designed to bring everyone together. By that, I mean everyone - from our administration to our student-athletes to you as a Spartan.

When I accepted this position, I stated that as your Athletic Director everything would be done with ONE FOCUS. Having been on this campus for more than 30 years as a student, alumnus, and employee, I have often observed that, as Spartans, we have not always been headed in the same direction. Nowhere has this fact more obvious than in the outward appearance of our team uniforms. We have been an athletic program of different greens, logos, word-marks, and uniform quality. There has been a lack of consistency with regard to our brand. This inconsistency was a result both of using multiple suppliers for our apparel and of uniform decisions being made without a department-wide focus.

After assuming the Athletic Director position, one of my initial objectives was to outfit each of our sports teams in a consistent manner and to do so as a component of a unique and cohesive national brand identity program. To accomplish this task, we expanded our partnership with Nike so that every one of our 25 teams and nearly 800 student-athletes will all wear Nike-designed uniforms and apparel. We feel fortunate to have Nike as a partner, not only to improve the way our teams look, but also for the unique performance advantages their products provide.

As part of the expanded partnership, we requested Nike conduct a department-wide assessment of our brand and identity. It's important to note that this request came as part of our agreement with Nike, but was not a condition of it. There was no cost to MSU for this service. Members of my staff, university administration, and I guided Nike designers through this in-depth process that is still in the final stages of completion.

In this process, Nike has suggested various innovative concepts and design elements, yet it is always Michigan State University that determines the direction we will take. Input from student-athletes, coaches, alumni, donors, students, faculty, and university public relations advisors have been involved in this process.

The recent disclosure of an updated Spartan logo from a trademark registration process has resulted in a flurry of concern and discontentment among some of our students, alumni, and fans. I have given careful attention to thoughtful comments received and sought additional counsel regarding how ideas might be incorporated into the overall strategic brand and identity process. Our primary objective is to achieve a strong and consistent Spartan brand, but rest assured that, as our mission statement attests, bringing Spartans together is one of our fundamental values.

Our identity and branding process is nearing completion and is on schedule for a complete rollout in April. The elements and applications of the brand design will be unveiled collectively at that time. After careful consideration, we will use the current Spartan logo design, first used in the late 1970s, to build our visual brand identity. Using sound branding principles, the university will continue to register some variations of our Spartan logo in order to ensure that this symbol is well protected and firmly associated with Michigan State University.

I agree with my fellow spartans. Our identity should not be sold to the highest bidder. I expect more from my University.

The logo/script/color on a sports jersey may change from year to year, and that is fine That is not our identity. It is fashion. But the spartan logo is tradition. Don't cheapen in by turning it into a "fashion statement". What is next?? Is someone going to propose we change the Spartan "S" to Times New Roman Font because we get free coffee from Starbucks?

  • Vic - 14 years ago

The proposed (?) new logo is underwhelming. It is even less exciting than watching the MSU TV ad that shows a single leaf blow along, accompanied by someone singing (?)/mumbling words that can't be discerned. Count me as unenthused, but then I'm only one alum from 40+ years ago...

  • Greg Bradford - 14 years ago

More than the new logo I am more concerned with shades of green in our uniforms. Can't they get the helmets and jerseys colors to match?

  • lilarmo - 14 years ago

Not that much of a change, the best change is TCU; looks like frog skin, and just played in BCS. Go Lucas! Go Sparty!

  • Judy Borawski - 14 years ago

The Football team is smoking!!!! The Basketball team is smoking!!!! Why would they want to jinx everything by changing the logo. Sounds like an administrative decision which stinks!!!!!

  • paul - 14 years ago

i can't believe it took two years to come up with this. as a graphics artist i would be embarrased to show this as a final work.

  • Disgruntled Grandfather - 14 years ago

New logo NO! Will still attend sporting events and grudgingly accept being coerced to "donate" for better seating since I love our Spartans. But if the new is logo enacted I'll withdraw additional support. Why?
1 I'm not interested in supporting change for Nike's sake.
2 Doesn't look like a helmet at first glance( 300 not withstanding ).
3 Looks sinister and ominous not strong, clean and bold like the old one.
4 Wouldn't get grandkids items with new fierce malevolent appearing logo.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!! I'd accept a slightly changed logo but not this one!!

  • MSU student - 14 years ago

We need to organize a protest or petition to demand that the new logo should not be used. This is embarrassing as a student and future alum to see this change come in the mist of tuition increases and hard financial times. Now I am going to show up to the game in the wrong logo because some AD in his ivory palace can pass something off because some joker in a Nike suit said it’s a good move. We already know that the University sank a lot of money into this new brand but I refuse to waste my own. I would like to ask all Spartans to fight to keep the old logo by not wasting their money on something as shallow as a new identity brand. They may be able to force me to spend more money in tuition but they cannot force me to throw out my authentic Spartan gear for such a sellout move.

  • Kaela - 14 years ago

Why don't they take all that extra money they are wasting on new logos, and donate it towards something good? Like the Deaf Ed program MSU is eliminating!

  • amy - 14 years ago

the new logo looks terrible, if they get it im glad i'll be graduating......gross.

  • Barb Ringlein - 14 years ago

Why a new logo? 1. Of the two, the existing one is better to me. 2. Relatedly, the new one is so similar much of the population wouldn't percieve a change. For these two reasons, why spend money (waste money) on such a venture...is our existing logo being used elsewhere and so not unique enough to establish our brand indentity? Give us legitamate motivation behind this!

  • myra - 14 years ago

I see a evil profile @ first glance, don't like it at all ..........!

  • Upset Alum - 14 years ago

I find it appalling that MSU would allow a corporation to come in and change things like logos, font, and even throw out the idea of changing a schools' colors. Michigan State has years of tradition, all of which are in jeopardy for a few dollars from Nike. I want my alma matter to step up to the plate and stand strong for tradition and not sell out. This is their chance to stand up against Corporate America and make a solid statement that money can't buy everything. One thing is for certain, my donations will suddenly stop if Moo-U folds.

  • Bish - 14 years ago

The new logo is totally cheesy, like we're ripping off 300. The old logo is pure class and tradition. What a waste of money. Looks like I need to stock up on Spartan Gear before april.

  • Kevin Rowan - 14 years ago

After this fiasco of trying to change a perfectly good logo, the University should begin their search for a new AD.

  • spartan for life - 14 years ago

What the Heh! This is a hoorible mock up. And I sure hope this is a mock up and not a done deal. This is the kind of crap that goes on behind closed doors, without input from alumni who donate and the students themselves. The alumni assoc. is going to get a big $0 from me if this is the way they want to run things!

  • Kim - 14 years ago

NO ZIT HEAD HELMET LOGO. Must have been designed and approved by U of M fans.

  • Eric B - 14 years ago

It looks like a cartoon image. What a joke. Hey Hollis, doesn't tradition mean anything to you? Nike and MSU will not realize more sales if they push this logo.

  • Spartanmom - 14 years ago

Just ugly....no other way to describe. Will not buy but I will wear my old stuff until it falls apart.

  • frank and beans - 14 years ago

Go Green! GO White! Turd nuggets unite!!!!11

  • frank and beans - 14 years ago

looks like an over polished turd nugget!! puke, wtf, idiots!!!!11, I could have pooped something that looked better

  • Frank - 14 years ago

I just can't believe how a few can have their way over the objection of so many. The traditional Spartan Logo needed to be updated? Says who? Nike? This issue needs to be reconsidered by those who think nothing of taking a treasured, nationally recognized icon rich in history and tradition and re-making it into their own image, and then have the gall to claim that it's all about identity. This is certainly not going to go over well with the majority of Spartans and MSU supporters. The bottom line is, the new logo doesn't even look like a Spartan. Please, give the people who created this thing their money back. They failed miserably.

  • Denny Ramos - 14 years ago

I can't believe in these economic times and with the tuition increases that occur every year that MSU would invest in a brand identity overhaul. I get that Nike will be able to manufacture this cheaper, but as a life long Spartan fan, I will NEVER purchase anything with this hideous logo on it. From the fan reaction, I imagine most other fans won't either. What a colossal mistake.

  • Charlotte Bruce - 14 years ago

I'm absolutely disgusted!! While we are at it, why don't we melt down the bronze statue of Sparty, and have some Nike marketing genius come up with a new design? MSU just got my last dime. None of my money will go to such frivolous, unnecessary, unpopular, and undesirable projects.

  • Kathy - 14 years ago

I am NOT in favor of the new logo!!!!!!!!!
    1. waste of money that should be spent on education.
    2. don't fix it if it's not broken.
    3. what was wrong with the old one.
    4. why doesn't MSU ask the students and alumni what they think - maybe the money will stop coming in!!!!!

  • THEPOPAL - 14 years ago

Wow. That's horrible. What were they smoking when they came up with this one? It like someone took the blindfold test to come up with this one.

  • Rob - 14 years ago

I will not support anything to do with this logo. It is ugly, doesn't add anything new to the design that would improve it, and it dumbed down the helmet so it costs less to print. This looses the authenticity of the Spartan logo as well as fans. I can say now that merchandise sales will not increase with this change; they will decrease drastically. Thanks for you ruining the MSU legacy!

  • Mark Piersma - 14 years ago

This is a joke, right? If not, than my reaction is similar to the rest... UGLY!

  • Kara - 14 years ago

Last time I checked, Sparty wasn't supposed to have a tumor on his forehead.

  • stacy - 14 years ago

The new logo is horrible. Is this just a way for Nike to try to make more money by forcing people to buy clothes with the new logo? I will not be buying anything which has that new martian mascot on it. I want to know what has brought on this need for change.

  • LonghornSpartan - 14 years ago

Why is the university spending good money on something that doesn't need to be changed? What advantage is there of changing it? The brand is fine as is. Did some focus group determine that changing it to something funkier and theoretically more modern would be better? Why not slap a Twitter, digg or Facebook logo, etc. on there if you want to modernize it? Instead of "just do it", I say "just say no!"

  • Kim Dyer - 14 years ago

Did a Wolverine design that thing. It looks like he has a zit on his forehead. I won't be buying stuff with THAT logo on it, that's for sure.

  • D Chesnut - 14 years ago

    Do NOT mess with tradition.

  • Michael Cichowski - 14 years ago

    Looks terrible.

  • Mark - 14 years ago

Remember the New Coke disaster of 1985? Mr. Hollis had better review how the Coke execs handled that mess...

...let's not forget the teal Detroit Pistons with the flaming horse either.

Yes! I want the "classic" Spartan logo!

  • John - 14 years ago

Another example of those who are in control telling us what is best for us and that which we hold dear. It is certainly being driven by financial incentives and is without regard for the sentiment of those who are most interested. Look at the voting results for god sake. By the way, why should Nike have a say in the process anyway???

  • POed Spartan - 14 years ago

MSU needs to know that the checks I use to make donations to the University have the OLD LOGO on them. Might have to stop sending them……..

  • Meghan - 14 years ago

This new logo is absolutely ridiculous.....there is nothing wrong with the old one and I'm pretty sure that MSU will lose student and alumni support if they change this thing without any input from the people that keep them in business. GET A CLUE.

  • sparty - 14 years ago

Why why why? leave the logo alone.... Looks great the way it is.

  • 87spartan - 14 years ago

    NOOOOOOOO!
This looks like someone HAD to make changes to something that was already perfect! It's like giving someone a bowling ball and asking them to make it rounder. What comes back is an oval! AWFUL! I'm going to stock up on current logo-wear to cover me for the rest of my life! I'm not buying anything with that piece of *$*#!

  • John Sneed - 14 years ago

This is an affront to historical Michigan State University. I am confused why a realationship between MSU and Nike would cause or warrent a logo change.

This is the NBC late night TV work being done at MSU.

  • Alexander - 14 years ago

Via a quick Google search, the proposed change appears to be more authentic. However, that should not matter. I read into the article, that "NIKE WANTS MORE SALES"!?!?!?! Please do not change.

  • Denise - 14 years ago

Definitely do NOT like the new one. The face lookes like a pop-art high-heal shoe with the nose covering part looks like a bent martini glass dumping into it. Should leave the classics alone.

  • Jerry Fraske - 14 years ago

Mark Hollis, you've been a great AD with many inovative ideas but this new logo is a HUGE mistake and a turn to the wrong direction. The current Spartan helmet is distinctive and traditional and should be kept just as it is. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!" The new logo doesn't look anywhere near as good as the current one. April is three months off. There's still time to back off from this very bad decision. Please!!!!

  • Ryan - 14 years ago

This is the biggest sell out of all! Nike wants this new logo because it will be cheaper for them to produce since it will require less screens...but they'll still charge $50.00 for a hoodie with the logo and dang Nike Swoosh. Two years to design this logo and it looks like Stevie Wonder listened to 300 and then tried to draw the logo (no offense, love Stevie Wonder). We must rebel!

  • Lyle - 14 years ago

    Can anyone say UGLY!!!

    Whose bright idea was this?

  • Linda Juenemann - 14 years ago

The new logo looks like Case Western logo. What is the mission statement to changing this? Listen to the people on this and don't waste the money.

  • Fred - 14 years ago

Leave well enough alone ! I love the old spartan logo .Like the others said it is crisp and clean looking . And everybody is familar with it .

  • joe - 14 years ago

MONEY. New logo = new merchandise sales. They'll feed us some b.s. about a new "brand identity", but the fact is it's increased revenue. If they just told us, "hey, alumni donations aren't what they used to be, and Nike proposed this to increase revenue and thus decrease tuition", then maybe I'd learn to like the new logo. I mean, I liked the movie 300, and yes, I get chills when everyone in the Stadium gives the Spartan Waooo, but changing our logo....too far guys.

  • Josh - 14 years ago

I guess i'll be the first....kinda like it...still don't understand why the old one needs to be changed, but if is going to, this works.

  • Brooke - 14 years ago

This logo will lose alot of support from students and alumni, especially if they don't consider how we feel about the change... A university is supposed to be a united force with communication between staff, students, alumni, etc... this will divide us!!!

  • Sandy - 14 years ago

The current logo is so clean and sharp, and perfectly fine! In these times of economic stress, why waste the money on a new logo/ad campaign? It's "cheaper to keep her" or him as the case may be. He's classy and classic.

  • M - 14 years ago

This new logo has taken away some of the fine edges of the old logo that give it a crisp and sharp look (alike the lines in the plume holder). This new logo looks like some student thought it would be cooler to make the helmet have a more curved front face alike the helmet in the 300 movie that came out several years ago.

The most I can say is that maybe a blend between the 2 would be more appealing ... but as far as rating this new proposed logo on its own ... STICK WITH THE OLD ONE!!!

  • bo - 14 years ago

this is why i won't buy season tickets agian what's next are they going to change our colors.idiots!!!!!

  • Michelle - 14 years ago

the new logo is FUGLY!!!!!!!!! >:(

  • Joe - 14 years ago

The worst idea ever. Way to disappoint alumni and students. Is this where my donations go? If so, I may need to stop.

  • Dan D'Orazio - 14 years ago

You cannot estalish tradition and a brand identity if you continually change the symbol or icon of this great university! MSU has a brand already that is classic, unique and recognized throughout this land. Just win. It's not rocket science! The marketing person that conjured this must be a M grad! Don't change the current logo!!!!

  • BleedGreen - 14 years ago

I don't understand why MSU and Nike feel the need to change our logo. The old one looks so much better than the new one.

  • Z - 14 years ago

Ugly! Doesn't the athletic department have anything better to do than change a log that THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH!

  • 88EconAlum - 14 years ago

The new logo is an "epic fail" on the behalf of the U. Why "fix" something that's not broken?

  • Alumni Perspective - 14 years ago

Wow... Why do they have to change a logo that is perfectly fine? This is a sad day for both students and alumni!

  • joe - 14 years ago

    couldn't agree more bill!

  • bill - 14 years ago

    this logo looks like crap
