    – I tried to make Safari my default we browser but I think I have done something stupid Or uninstalled something I should not have. I went into access / programme defaults / non-Microsoft and made safari default browser …
    but then it started uninstalling something and when I click on a link in an email or in word or somewhere I get this message ;

' the operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. '

    Any ideas? ? ?

I've switched back and forth trying to convince myself that Safari 4.0 is truly optimized for my system and being that I have a mac and run Leopard that would appear to be the case. But I notice no speed increase. Okay, maybe slight but the fact that the only customization features are horriffically primitive and many require SIMBL which, if you've ever tried to even install SIMBL its an absolute nightmare which makes no sense to me because Apple Software and mac stuff is hands down the easiest and most user friendly of any OS I've ever used. I used to love Mac and Apple products because it seemed that they offered extensive user customization in most of not every aspect every piece of software, systems etc. that they have ever developed but as of late (Leopard, Safari 4.0 etc.) they seem to be moving away from that a little more which is disappointing.
Thus, until somebody gives me one good reason to switch from Firefox as my default, and no, telling me its "Optimized for my system" isn't good enough. And hey, maybe offer a download or two other than weak ass Glims or that pathetic excuse for an add on "Safari Stand". You talk about an absolute disgrace.

Have you ever heard of an effing toolbar? As in Google? Windows Live? MSN? ANY KIND OF A TOOLBAR WOULD BE A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

And NO, this coverflow bullshit top sites resource hog doesnt do it for me either. Spend more time reading and talking to your actual users and less time and money on those crappy "Im a Mac" commercials. You can't compete with Microsoft in volume and marketing! But you CAN compete in quality and up until as of late, you've always dominated that competition in my book.
    Safari sucks.

Go make it better then let us know when its time to really switch over.

I'm not going to rush in and make Safari my default browser on the first day, but so far I like it for the most part. It's going to take some time using it before I jump that fence. I don't like the search bar, give us some more search engine options and give us an icon to click on instead of having to press .

There are many things I like, and some I don't, but just like all my other browsers it's going to take some time using it before I can make the decision about which one wins the default browser prize. Right now Firefox has that honor, and not because I think it's perfect by any means, but until Microsoft gets it's act together and starts doing what the mainstream wants instead of the Bill Gates way of bucking the system and sticking his finger in everyones face; ie I'll do it my way like it or lump it, IE will not be my default browser for the foreseeable future. Safari may or may not become my default; time will tell.

I don't care about looks but it would be nice to have some skins to dress it up a bit, but performance wins out over looks every time with me. Browsers are just like cars, computers, and people; looks are great, but it they can't perform where it counts then all that beauty isn't worth much. We will see how Safari measures up in the next few weeks.

I hate that Safari 4 PC looks like a Windows app. On top of that, it looks like a rushed Windows app. I love most things about it. I just hope that in the final release, they give you an option to make it look like Safari 3 PC.
Things I hate about Safari 4: *It's look. It looks like a rushed program. *The loading bar behind the URL bar is gone and has been replaced by a loading circle.

i gave it a try on my powerbook g4 12" and after a night it ended up killing my hardrive... it looks like it was too much for my 5 year old computer.

now i think there should be a warning... even though its a beta.

I switched from Firefox... and then switched back. I want, no, NEED my add-ons!

Garbageware like all Apple's software. SWIron or IE8 FTW!

tried it on my mac book pro for a couple hours and then went back to safari 3. i'm not a fan of the layout. i don't know the reason for putting tabs on top. chrome has that and that's one of the reasons i don't use it. i hope the next version of firefox doesn't go this direction. the look of the tabs seems sloppy to me as well. cover flow needs a lot of work. the top sites feature is a gimmicky tools that i don't need. i don't need to see what the web page look like before i go to them. it just wastes time loading them when i could already have opened up a few tabs with them. i didn't fool with my mail when using safari 4 so i had no problems there. i also didn't notice my system acting up. i see no reason to switch to 4 from 3 or firefox.

    what it like:
i really like the "Top Sites" feature because the thumbnails are updated with the sites they represent.
i like the cover flow bookmarks/history.

    what i don't like:
i don't like the massive tabs.
i miss having the address bar double as a search field.. like in chrome.

    what doesn't matter to me:
no 3rd party extension support. didn't really use it on fire fox, except for foxy proxy and thats only cause i like to use the BBC iPlayer.

at the moment i use Chrome because i find it does a better, faster job rendering web sites then fire fox.. as for Safari, it doesn't offer me enough difference from chrome to make me care to switch.

Installed Safari 4. Crashed Mail. Crashed Macbook Pro. Now after a lost day am reinstalling Mac OS X. Let's say I'm not sold on it.

For some reason, Safari can't load Youtube videos on Google Reader. I'm also having trouble with the Coverflow History and Top Sites (the images won't load at all). Too buggy to be adopted as my new browser.

Haven't touched it. Safari 3 was crap, and I don't like Apple software on my Windows machine. It doesn't play well, and doesn't work the way I do. And the lack of extension support still makes it impossible to replace Firefox. I'd switch to Chrome before I'd switch to Safari. I use Firefox as my primary, I use Chrome for fast, understated browsing and its page-as-application functions. Safari provides nothing I need or want. Heck, I'd use IE before it.

No extensions will continue to be the deal killer. Plus, i found lags in playing video in Safari, and I don't like the tabs. I prefer the smaller default tab size in Chrome and Firefox, not the massive tabs that cover the whole bar. I want to be able to just grab the tab and move it, not have to grab the corner.

who cares? i miss the days of txt based websites... less crap to infect your machine...

After installing Safari 4 Mac Mail started giving me problems. It kept trying, unsuccessfully, to download mail. After I uninstalled it Mail went back to working again.

  • Mj - 15 years ago

I tried it because I was sick and tired of my IE7 or even IE8 Candid for getting disconnected all the time, but since the Favorites menu is badly laid out and very hard to organize them and also Flash Player does not work on it properly, I switched back to IE8. Grafic is nice but thats all about it.

This "survey" is a good example for why surveys mean nothing because the only people who bother with them are people who have an agenda (Usually fanboying for their favorite brand).

50% of participants use Safari? Match that to the results of what browsers people are actually using and it will be significantly lower than 50%.

  • Jason - 15 years ago

Can't stand the new tabs that the top thing. Also, it's starting to look way to much like chrome. The button on the right look exactly the same.

  • NCBob - 15 years ago

I haven't set it to default yet, I so want to I really like it, but until MashedLife is compatible with it, I need to stay with Firefox.

As soon as they make it compatible I am so switching.

  • Russ - 15 years ago

Safari 4 is everything I wanted Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari 3 to be... all in one browser. I find that even in beta it's faster than lightning and really pretty.

I say this as someone who loves Firefox for its speed and simplicity and really like Chrome for its forward thinking interface. The new Safari rocks my XP machine though. Love it.
