i bought a laptop for $500 and my pc as well, i've since upgraded the pc for about $150 but i can run all the software i need. adobe, 3dsmax, matchmovers etc. nobody, absolutely nobody needs quad core laptops, 4gig+ of ram, dedicated gpus. you're just being full of shit, really. even if your reasoning is behind games, i'm pretty sure COD sucks ass to play on a silly keyboard and mini mouse and any really gfx,cpu intensive is going to fry that behemoth. i really love watching people explain their full of shit choices. higher price = prestige is which this is all about. alienware, seriously anyone whoever considered getting an alienware is pretty hilarious to me. i clump them up with the mac crowd who call themselves geeks when they dont know the basic differences between a mac and a pc. technology is severely limited to recoup the losses of r&d. i really despise early adopters.

I actually have a $3,000 laptop for college, but only because I'm in TV/Film production and I actually use the muscle of my MacBook Pro. AfterEffects kind of needs a good CPU and GPU combo, and I'm willing to pay the premium for a reliable OS (I can't afford to spend an entire weekend nuking and rebuilding my machine every once in a while during the semesters ahead, and Time Machine has saved my ass before).

If I wasn't Radio/TV/Film, then I'd probably just own an Eee PC or a low end MacBook (before this year, my Junior year, I used a four year old iBook G4) for note taking.

  • Buy a Lenovo laptop - a $100 will buy you a lot of notebook

I voted no. Between using my Nokia N series as a web device at home and having a Mac Pro workstation for work, I don't use the laptop all that much. And as more and more of our info and apps are in the cloud, I think laptop makers are going to have a harder and harder selling high end laptops like they used to. A lot of consumers just need a way to get online.

  • Poent - 16 years ago

I voted yes simply because of what I use it for. I just bought a Sony Viao FW because it was a stunning media slimline laptop capable of playing games Respectably well.

I tend to take my laptop everywhere and do everything with it. Being able to watch HD movies on it, play all the games out there from WoW to Crysis (on Medium settings) seemed to do the $1,300 justice. Not to mention the built in bluetooth, camera, impressively quick p8400 CPU, and the overall build quality.

I have to say that unless you're a intense computer gamer or you're doing any kind of 3d artwork then most people don't need more than a $600 computer.

I have a Dell XPS 1330, after waiting 2 years for a macbook update and wanting a small and light laptop with power, the dell was a better option for me dropping $1K+ to get what I wanted. and it runs os x.

I'm still on a 3 year old PowerBook G4 that is the best laptop I have ever owned, that can still fetch $800-900 in my local market. Its about time to upgrade so the net cost of approximately $1000 is worth it.

My wife on the other hand went for a $500 HP on sale at Best Buy after her 5 year-old iBook died. Since she mainly surfs and emails, we installed Ubuntu and she couldn't be happier with a machine that is in many respects cleaner and simpler to use than a Mac. She just could not justify an extra $600 or so for something that looks a bit sexier.

  • terry chay - 16 years ago

Since Mac's have good resale value, I suggest you eBay/Craigslist the old Macbook, and the upgrade cost will be much less than $1000 :-)

  • chrillo - 16 years ago

i voted yes because I currently own a MBP and it is by far the best of the 4 notebooks I have owned so far . I am a web developer, so I use my notebook too many hours a day. for me it is worth the money .I love it --> OS X more than the hardware. I disagree with the question in general if a mac notebook is worth a 1000$. It is a tool and its worth is the result of personal usage, for some people a eee pc is fine for some people a Mac Book pro for 3000 dollars is right. It is your own money and not even steve can take it from you unless you think it is a good deal for you. its a question of common sense what type of user one is and how much money one invests into computers. It is a good thing there is choice, and you can choose which product offers the best value. at the end of the day your personal value is all that counts, whether you spent 2000$ on a mac or 200$ on an eee pc.

Although I said yes, like others, I ordered the MacBook Pro. Why? Because I really needed a $2,500 machine. Why? Why ask why?

    Especially since I'm a PC.

Great video card. Enough RAM. 7200RPM hard drive. Not too small. Just right.

  • Val - 16 years ago

Yes, got a Dell XPS1530 with LED screen and T8100 processor, 4GB of RAM. You need to max it out when dealing with video editing and especially if you land on a good 30% off coupon (that was my case and excuse). I love it, worth every penny ($1100 with tax and shipping). For those buying Celerons for $400 and upgrading to C2D for extra $700, look at some Dell refurbished laptops (full 1 year warranty) and you can score decent specs for around $500. But for those with exclusive needs, sure why not spend $1,000 (especially if 0% interest is offered). I do plan on keeping it for 3-4 years, then selling to 3rd world country user and getting a newer model (full spec upgrade). For regular Joe on the street, no need to spend more then $600 (get C2D, 2-3GB of RAM), Intel graphics will do and you are set! Hope this helps someone!

Yes. Currently running a maxed out Dell XPS 1330 as my main laptop/desktop replacement, can’t give up the speed. But just got an HP MiniPC netbook as my wander around the house, check e-mail on the can, take to the coffee shop net cruiser, mainly because I’m scared to death to take the 3k+ dell out of the house.

I had certain requirements for a laptop and those included graphics editting with Photoshop CS2 and extensive video editting. These forced certain hardware configurations and, regardless of how I looked at it, they all came up to more than $1000.

That being said, I have recommended to others who have reduced requirements (ex. extensive document editting but little to no graphics editting) to buy a less expensive laptop with the idea of replacing it more frequently.

  • Brandon - 16 years ago

I need a $1000 laptop for development purposes. However, because of the minor differences between the metal Macbook and the Macbook Pro I don't see any reason to pay $2000, unless you were editing video.

  • bk - 16 years ago

Yes, I'm a video editor. I do a lot of motion graphics and composting. A lot of work is done away from home, so I can't use a MacPro.

I honestly do need a $3,000 apple laptop.

  • Jeff Goodstein - 16 years ago

Yes. I would want a 1000 dollar laptop.
I have three desktops that I want to get and rid of and replace with three laptops. On of the laptops in this config would need to be a 1000+ as I would want 3GB RAM, DVD burner, and a dedicated video processor (128-512 RAM) to take the place of my main workhorse.

  • Dane - 16 years ago

No I would never buy one with my own money, but I happily use the $2500 Dell Company Laptop (Benefit of being the IT Manager got to configure it myself)

Though 17+ "laptops" are too big/heavy to really be considered portable. For a small Laptop I would pay a premium for portability if I was in the market for such.

  • Derek - 16 years ago

I have a 400 dollar cheapie laptop that I bought from Best Buy--an 14.1 inch Acer with a lousy celeron. 70 bucks and a new core 2 duo via ebay, and I have the cheapest C2D laptop you're gonna see anywhere. Sure it doesn't look sexy, but it gets the job done

  • JR - 16 years ago

I voted no, but I recently came into possession of a 17" MacBook Pro, which was a little over $3,000. I never would have bought this myself; my company footed the bill.

  • Charles - 16 years ago

It's simple. Think about how much time you will use your computer for its lifetime. Think about how much value that adds to your life, after doing the math it seems pretty simple to me that it totally makes sense to get the best in order to maximize the value of your money.

  • Dragontologist - 16 years ago

Honestly, the main reason I want the Macbook Pro (and that's the PRO, mind you, at nearly double the $1000 you're talking about) is because I want it as a desktop REPLACEMENT. I want to sit back on the couch upstairs and watch the Simpsons while I play a game that deserves two video cards.

  • JV - 16 years ago

No - Buying the cheapie Asus instead. Either way, I'd buy the $1,300 one way before the $1,000 one.
