There is no doubt the military should change their policy on this. Animals are so much more than just animals. They are support systems, companions, friends, family and our very best friends. Not only are can they be very important to our soldiers who befriend them in a combat zone, but they can be vital to our soldiers very survival - especially when they come back home where they can face challenges and emotions they never anticipated. Having a animal that was with them while surving abroad also with them on home ground can be more healing than any medicine a doctor could prescribe.
