Deputy Kenny's stunt is nauseating. He is proposing to take a pay cut of 5% of his basic salary (approx €100k) as opposed to 5% of his total remuneration, which was reported yesterday as being of the order of €160k. At the same time, he is suggesting that public servants earning above €50k, i.e. a third of his salary, should take a pay freeze. If Deputy Kenny believes that, in this day and age, €50k is a 'high' salary, that serves to demonstrate just how out of touch he really is. The manner in which he publicly sprung this on his Finance spokesman, thereby forcing Deputy Bruton to also commit to a 5% salary reduction was apalling. The actions of a leader? I think not. Opposition, what opposition?
Kenny was right to take a paycut, but 5%? Thats nothing to what a TD earns, especially a party leader.Remember it was only recently he packed in his teachers wages which he was getting along with his leaders allowance and TD wages.
Our public representatives need to realise that a great number of people in this country regard them as "fat cats". They earn huge sums, have gold-plated pensions and extremely generous expense accounts- paid for by us. For them to lecture the electorate of this country is unthinkable unless they take significant pay cuts. I am not holding my breath on this one. Gombeen politics are alive and well (and amply rewarded) in our political system. A 20% pay cut would mean something in symbolic terms.
TD's can show real leadership during these financial meltdown times by taking a substantial paycut. They are buffered more than mainstreet Ireland! So show the flag & lead us out of harder times~
The Politicians are alreay on big wages and pensions considering when you look at some of the Dail debates only about 5 people turn up, we elected them to attend all dails processings, what would happen if the PAYE worker only went to work in the day's that suited them. They have longer holiday's than all of us and at the end of thd day's it's the senior civil servants that make the calls and they only sign there names at the end of the paper
they should take at least a 50% pay cut, coz the people who are in poverty wont do well out of the budget, and they can afford it. they should never of given the money to the banks, when ireland has no money to give, how about looking after their own first, the people who voted for them
