There is still a conflict, but it's normal.

Shut the fuck up, alright McCain made the first gesture by patting Obama on the back but since Obama and you Democrats are such stupid retards you're all making too big a deal out of it.

I watched this numerous times and it appears to me that Obama turned to his right expecting Cindy McCain and he mouths something as he does this. I have no idea what he saying obviously but it could be that he is seeking out Cindy McCain to shake her hand. Then John McCain redirects him to where Cindy is standing and they seem to laugh briefly about the whole thing.

Well, it may have just been an akward moment, which has become McCain's signature. Why would you tap someone on the opposite shoulder than you are standing on, then when that person turns around, you say "she did it"? McCain is a very strange man...

Not having the decency to shake your opponent's hand in the time of national emergency, in time of war, while casting yourself as someone who reaches across the partisan isle? Give me a break... If McCain's debate tactics are any indication of his diplomatic skills he will succeed in completely marginalizing this nation from our allies, drive us even deeper into this recession and probably lead us into another war.

McCain even caught his wife off guard when he deferred Obama's gesture. And while Obama obliged, neither McCain nor his wife would reciprocate that courtesy to Michelle!

And as for McCain "initiating" the congenialities... a pat on the back never suffices for a handshake in a formal context. A handshake signifies an element of respect. A senator of 26 years would surely understand that- unless, of course, that senator is clueless about diplomacy.

Obama has been clear that he respects McCain for his service, his sacrifice and his patriotism. Much less than a handshake, McCain would not even look at his "opponent" in the first debate. This latest display of disrespect highlights McCain's disdain for Obama, and more importantly underscores his inability to communicate with those who disagree with him and his policies. (Who does that sound like?)

Hopefully he'll mind his manners when he refers to Obama as "Commander in Chief" in less than a month.

I wish McCain would stop calling everyone his friend when he clearly acts like a stuck up McBitch.

"DIRECTS" is the key word. Again, arrogance. Why does McCain think he does not have to shake Michelle's hand?

  • William - 16 years ago

While it looks like a snub and I believe it was, what you fail to see is that McCain initiates by contacting Obama's back with his left hand and as Obama turns thinking McCain is looking to shake...McCain directs Obama to shake hands with his wife. It leaves Obama looking confused.

    D'oh. Okay, I stand corrected:

Very last video towards bottom of page.

Although I do think that was a very odd interchange nonetheless.

McCain has proven time and again that he is a racist -- refusing to even look at Obama in the first debate (the white man's snub of minorities), calling Obama "that one" (as if Obama were just a no-name slave) and then setting Obama up for a non-handshake (as if the massa couldn't touch the slave's hand). As a southerner, this kind of body language is all too evident to me.

"Friendly" move? What's your excuse for him NOT shaking his hand and for both John and Cindy to completely ignore Michelle? Rude and disrepectful. Also, I would have loved to hear the snide comment he made. Funny, they left immediately afterwards while the Obamas stayed for over 20 minutes talking to the INDEPENDENTS that comprised much of the audience.

  • Bruce C. - 16 years ago

McCain pats Obama on the back before Obama extends his hand. So McCain made the first "friendly" move. I am a staunch Obama supporter, but I am also of fan of the truth and reality.

I can't believe people want Mc Cain to run this country. He acts like a fool. Just what we need a" FOOL TO REPLACE A FOOL"!

  • morgan - 16 years ago

The obvious snub aside, was anybody else completely creeped-out by McCain's jittery walk, too-close-to-the-audience stalking, jabbering delivery, and ghoulish grin? I already hated him, but I wasn't completely terrified before tonight. Yikes!
