Do you think Wesley Powell should have resigned?

More did half of Richmond county police, talk like that, and that is not the first time one of them have talk like that.

Talking ugly and using profanity is not the only thing Officer Powell has done in the past. He has on at least one occassion altered a legal document (a citition) after it was issued and got away with it. So I say what goes around comes around.

There are more Wesley Powell on the Richmond county police department.

I'm glad he was fired! He is one of many that still have not been caught. I'm sure there have been complaints about his behavior in the past that have been ignored, this is probobly not new to some of his fellow deputies either. I wonder was he speaking to another deputy when he made those demeaning remarks? Will the Sheriff Dept investigate that too?

It bothers me what makes this man or boy think that he is better than someone else. He is a coward because he is the type of person who says these things hiding behind a badge. Be a man and speak up for what you are. This man should have been fired and charges should be brought up against him for trying to live a lie. Look how stupid he really is by recording his own actions but yet he thinks that because of the color of his skin he is better. That lady that you stoped probably had a better job than you, probably made more money than you but yet you think that just by the color of her skin that she is what you say she is because that is how dumb you are. Richmond County how many more do you have?

OMG! I can't believe the words that came out of this deputy mouth. How dare you wear a badge and conduct yourself in this matter. I hope they place you in a cell with some of the same people you had locked up and let them monkey you around!

What kind of officer you call yourself when you make raciest remark. Not a very good one. Officers are here to serve and protect it don't matter what color you are. It is time for a change.

My name is Demond Brown. I'm a former member of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. I also went through the police academy with Powell. We got into it because a comment that he made about students that attend Lucy C. Laney High. He stated "you don't have to worry about anybody from Laney writing a statment on you, most of them can't read or write anyway." He is not the only one. I know this for fact. Is anything going to be done about it. No. How long do you think it's been going on before this incident? Augusta-Richmond County does not welcome blacks period. I can go on all day.

The sad part about it, is that this has been going on for a while. I'm really shocked that even though his conversation was recorded, that something was actually done about it. Black people have been harrassed and mistreated for years by these officers, and nothing was ever done. If a black person does not have the money to get a good attorney to fight it, then forget it. I will say that I'm happy that this is one less "racist cop" that Augusta has to deal with.

It doesn't matter if Powwell was in a county car or on vacation in New York. As a peace officer in the state of Georgia he falls under the code ethics and morales. Which pretty much means all police officers, correctional officers, probation officers, parole officers, fire fighters, etc... have to act a certain way on and off duty, and depending on what you do on or off duty that paticular officer could be held accountable up to loosing his/her certification as a peace officer. To Ms. Cynthia Ingram I don't know what the situation was with your cousin so I really can't speak on that. I've always known that Dep. Powwell hated blacks. Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash the Richmond County Sheriff's office. You can't punish all for a couple. I've had the pleasure of working with some great cops in Augusta, Ga.. I worked all the housing projects and loved it. The people in the projects liked the some of the white deputies better than they did me, and if it isn't obvious I am black. Let me make it clear that I have nothing negative to say about the Richmond County Sheriff's Office as a whole. Like anywhere else you are going to have a few bad apples. My comments are all about former Deputy Wesley Powwell. I hear people complain about the Sheriff's Office all the time. People never complain about the commisioners who refuse to pay for good police officers, but use tax payer money to go to Hawaii to get ideas on how to be a better government. They can go to lots of cities in GA. to get some good ideas. We need better leadership in Augusta, Ga. We need younger ideas. The leadership we have now is outdated. They look and act like stubborn old people. We get better leadership, more money for quality officers, and more money for better equipment for the Sheriff's office. I 'm willing to bet that you won't hear stories about Dep. Powwell.

Hello everyone. Just wanted to stop by and say a few things. I am Wesley Powell's ex boyfriend. Yes he is gay. When I found out what he did, I was furious. I never knew of his "racial" views. And I had thought on a day like today, people would be way past the whole civil rights movement. Its been 40 years since then. But as far as Wesley goes and from dating him. He was a very lonely, to himself type of guy, seemed like he had another life. He turned out to be a real jerk. Unfortunately people like him are not only in the Sheriff's Department. Its pretty much anywhere and everywhere of Augusta. I am a gay white catholic male and actually a member of the ACLU, NAACP, and Lambda Legal. And I disapprove of what he did. Alot of people need to be disciplined and as far as the Sheriff's Department goes they need to thoroughly evaluate their recruits before employing them. Not to mention Ronald Strength does not deserve his positition as sheriff for what he and my uncle did nearly 10 years ago. My uncle was a registered sex offender and has life behind bars. Before he became registered, Ronald Strength and my uncle both agreed to each other of having gay sex. But none of which I should judge, but I am just giving my honest opinion that alot of people in the SD do not deserve their positions for reasons like Wesley Powell. Truely unfortunate! Certainly this was not the first time he did or said something like this. He's much to comfortable in his conversation. Be not surprised. Unfortunately there are thousands of Westley Powell's across this country who are suppose to protect and preserve. If I could only write a book about the many stories that I hear daily, which have been reported and only mere technicalities within the departments, dismiss the complaints and these same Westley Powell's who has been put on unpaid leave pending investigation, are brought back and paid back pay and many times promoted. Be not suprised, there is still alot of hidden prejudice amongst us in 2009. Just think you may be living next door to a Westly Powell.
