I have tried acupuncture several times, but I prefer acupressure. My experience with acupuncture has consistently been one of having the practitioner come in, ask me a few questions about how I'm feeling, and then sticking between 10 and 15 needles into various points along my meridians; immediately after that, the practitioner leaves the room from anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes; while I am isolated in a dark room--sometimes w/music playing, sometimes not--then the practitioner returns and removes the needles. And I don't feel any change at all.
Whereas, when I have an acupressure session, practitioners use their hands instead of needles and are with me throughout the entire session. Most sessions last a hour, some 90 minutes. There is usually also soft music playing. When the procedure is complete, I feel like a new person for weeks.
I believe that both modalities were meant to be practiced with the practitioner in the room throughout the session, but acupuncturists seem to have turned the practice into "how many people can I treat in an hour" as opposed to "how many people can I help feel better." While on the other hand, acupressurists, using a continual hands on treatment are benefiting their clients in two ways; one is through the "healing of touch", the other is by being fully present with their clients for the entire session.
