I nursed my first three children successfully for close to a year each. My fourth failed to thrive and at three months had not yet reached the birth weight of her siblings. My very kind doctor did not say to stop nursing, just suggested that I "supplement". I saw her change before my eyes and realized that my need to nurse was not as great as her need to grow! I was a battered and abused wife at this time and I'm sure it was responsible for the lack of calories in my milk - she nursed around the clock but gained nothing! Until this experience I was very critical of any who said they "could not" nurse, believing that it really meant they did not want to. I learned that wanting is not always enough.
