Let's separate Amazon from iTune. All of amazon's music is (1) superior 256kbs MP3s, and (2) DRM free. Also - the cost per song is less than iTunes.
iTunes, on the other hand, has 128kbs ACC, most of which are DRM'd.
Big difference. I'm not an Apple hater - I have, right now, at least 5 iPods in this house. There is not really a better PMP out there. On the other hand, I am an iTunes-Hater. Like you said, passion is aroused when you talk music services. I am desparately seeking alternative to iTunes, but again, as you pointed, it intigrates nicely with a GEN1 Shuffle, 2 GEN2 shuffles, a GEN3 nano, a GEN4 nano, a 4GEN Video iPod, a 5GEN iPod, and now a 7GEN iPod.
And why did they force me to update to iTunes 8 when I upgraded my iPod Classic to GEN7???
