It's unfortunate that this odor problem is taking so long to be resolved .....especially since Dave Powers and friends have put so much effort/research into finding solutions that would be fair compromises for the farm owners and the recipients of this horrendous odor. What doesn't the town get about this being a potential health problem? I guess they think that people actually like staying indoors in nice weather.
The needs of the many should outweigh the needs of one. It is outrageous that one man can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, affecting thousands of people and it be legal. Expanding a pig industry and calling it a farm for protection should be illegal. The fact that any town in this state can not have minimum border restrictions for a pig farm, but has restrictions for where you put your shed, is ludicrous. For Tewksbury and Wilmington to allow residential building permits within 3 miles of this industry is questionable. These are the suburbs, not rural areas. Any industry (piggeries included) should only operate within strict guidelines set by that town that they reside in.
I have lived in Tewksbury since 1982. The last 2-3 years the odor occurrs more frequently and is much stronger. I dont agree it is due to the nights being cooler since I have noticed it on warm days and warm nights. i hope it can be resolved to everyones satisfaction.
cheers

It's outrageous that this man is allowed to pour more than 6,000 gallons of pig waste a week into our town's backyard. Tests have shown (and common sense would concur) that this action eventually poisons our groundwater and contaminates drinking wells and aquifers. Is this not reason enough to force this man's actions to cease and desist?
He must be distraught about the fact that everyone knows what he's doing to harm our environment now. Too bad about the ammonia, methane and hydrogen sulfide that permeates our family's lungs on a weekly basis, huh? We would have never known about the 300,000 yearly gallons that pollutes our way of life without the weekly manure and rotten eggs tip off...
You know he mentioned that taking care of this pig waste properly has become "cost prohibitive". So this man has chosen to adversely affect thousands of people so that he can make more money?... is he a former oil company exec by any chance? A simple Google search will tell you there a far better ways of handling pig waste then the polluting method.
I think we've all had enough of the smell but you know it never really had to come to this. This man has viable options that would actually benefit everyone. This website shows the damage he is currently doing, what the government says he should do and an even better idea that would end up making more money for the piggery.

Below is an example of a much larger piggery that implemented some of these ideas and now everyone is happy...
"An initial $2 million outlay to improve farm efficiency has resulted in savings of $435,000 a year, and has been able to reduce their impact on the environment by using biogas to generate electricity, recycle and conserve water, and turn waste into fertilizer or profit." http://www.ballarat.edu.au/projects/ensus/case_studies/piggery/
We all have rights but no one has the right to poison our environment as well as thousands of people living here. This one man is ruining our way of life and it's time to hold him accountable.
I agree with Mr. Dancewicz - The ARE ways to deal with this terrible stench and give us back our rights. I loved the idea that there was a real working farm nearby when I first moved here 18+ years ago, but this horrible odor is just too muce. Let's get real, Mr. Cave, and give everyone his due. (And mabbe even make MORE money out of it!)
I have been a Tewksbury resident since 1967. There were pig farms all around the area where I live at that time, but I never had a problem with enjoying my yard until the past couple of years. The smell at times is so bad that I have to close my windows and turn on the air conditioner inorder to take a breath of fresh air. There has to be something that can be done to curtail the strong order we have to live with. The town meeting on Oct. 7th is a good start. I appreciate the hard work that has been done to set this possible solution in motion.
one of the issues bothering me has been the response from the farm and its associates. they have continued to say we are a bunch of yuppies that have all just moved here and are trying to close the farm. the bottom line is this: my wife has lived here for 32 years, and we as well as my neighbors are the furthest thing from being a yuppie. we live paycheck to paycheck and should not have to deal with these horrid odors that one man is responsible for. Lastly these people are not running a farm they are running a pig mill, they are confining these animals in inhumane conditions where they lead horrible lives before they are slaughtered. this is nothing more than a slaughter house and it is a shame that one family thinks they have the right to do this to so many people.
OCTOBER 7,th TMHS
It's a start. Be there to vote
I think communication is lacking between the neighbors and the farm. I know for a fact the farm has implemented changes that take time, but is working in the direction that has a positive outcome. The farm know it has to change methods and is doing so. More town involvement is not the answer, the farm is getting inspections weekly , monthly ,etc. Artical #1 is more government overlap and is a violation to state right to farm laws. This does not allow the farm to be a public nuisance and the farm knows this.
Artical #1 could cause the demise of the farm, then what?? Low income housing, how many bedrooms could be established? Does Tewksbury need more kids in the schools? More public services will be needed. Litigation ofcourse would insue before all that. Becareful people on what we vote for.. It is our tax dollars that is at stake. Let the farm continue to remedy any issues, its happening already, but some people you just can't please.

To R in Tewksbury.....They don't pay tax's, sorry. At this point, anything would be better than the odor! The Farm bypassed the "government" when they built the new barn/large barn without any permits, no notice to neighbors, no nothing! The odor is here because the farm increased its operation by 300% and they can do it again and again. Enough, go vote yes on this article!
