On vacation, how do you decide which letterboxes to look for?

Availability: I check the last find/attempt lists

Blue diamond ratings on Atlas Quest: they increase the chance that I'll go looking for the box. I value the opinion of others who have found it before me

Comments: I read the public comments on Atlas Quest for each of the clues

Boards and forums: I post a message on regional boards asking for recommendations

Consult the locals: I email a letterbox enthusiast in the area asking for their opinion on local letterboxes

Proximity: I look for boxes near the hotel or enroute (I want to minimize driving)

Distance: drive-bys and short hikes (2 mile round trip, or less)

Planter: planted by known letterboxers - trailnames that I've seen on the letterboxing forums

Scenic/unique: the letterbox clues say that the location is scenic or unique in some way

Titles: Eye-catching letterbox titles

Tourist oriented: takes me to places unique to the area, representative to the area, stamp and theme is unique to the area (e.g. Eiffel Tower/Paris; Big Apple/New York)

Companion-friendly: whatever my noxer travelling partner will put up with

Mapping: easy to locate on a map

Clues: creative clues go to the top of my list

Type of stamp: hand-carved stamps go to the top of my list

Kid-friendly: are the kids likely to have fun finding the box

Probably should have included "rural" and "urban". I avoid urban boxes like the plague, get outta town ASAP. I'm sure there are others who are the opposite, afraid of the great outdoors, find only urban boxes.

Since most of our vacations have been focused on hiking (even before letterboxing), we choose boxes based on Distance = LONGEST hikes. These go to the top of our list. We then fill in with any shorter hikes that are in the area of the longer hikes.

We skip any urban or "exposed" sounding locations.
