If a ball and bat together cost $1.10 and the bat costs $1.00 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost?

The answer is 5 cents ($0.05). Consider the equations:

    $1.05 + $0.05 = $1.10 and $1.05 - $0.05 = $1.00

If the ball were $0.10 the total would be $1.20 (as the bat must be 1 whole dollar more than the ball).

I answered the poll about the cost of thebat and the ball. I'm not sure I have it right. How do I get the rationale behind it?

    Thanks
