Definately not Anfield, fantastic european nights, very poor otherwise. Newcastle was, but not anymore, Goodison not bad either, but Pompey is without doubt the current best, no doubt about it.

If you were looking at the stadium itself you would have to bow down to the Emirates as the ultimate new theatre for football, but for atmosphere Fratton Park stands out a mile as the best.

Nowadays, White Hart Lane is good. The Hawthorns can get pretty noisy too. Fratton? You must be joking. When I was there last season, there was a bit of bell-ringing, a few "ner, ner, ner, ners", long spells of total silence and finally they booed their own team off the pitch. Fulham fans totally outsang them.

Joe and Nickynick, if you think that you little bunch of country bumpkins ringing a cow bell and blowing a bugle constitutes an "atmosphere" perhaps you should stick to going to Morris dancing competitions.

Big city stadiums in the hotbeds of football, like Newcastle, Sunderland and Liverpool still generate the best football atmospheres by far.

What a total joke of a survey. Instead of asking What club has the best atmosphere, just ask who do you support. Like anyone is gonna vote for anyone else other than the team they support. What a stupid waste of time question to ask. I voted for West Brom, cause suprise suprise im a West Brom fan who goes there every week and refuse to believe that any other teams fans create a better atmosphere than us. But that is because i am incredibly biast towards my team, like any one else who would vote.

Actually an independant survey was carried out in 4-4-2 magazine a couple of years ago which put West Bromwich Albion at the top, with liverpool second and Newcastle third.

And even more recently researchers recorded the noise levels at every Premiership ground taking an average from a 4 month long test. Sunderland's stadium of light created the most noise. It certainly is an intimidating place to go. If i'm honest I'm suprised WHL is at the top. We create a great atmosphere...at times but certainly not the best. From my own experience i'd have to go for the Stadium of Light or Anfield.

That's right, I agree with the WBA lad. The poll results mean little. They would only mean something if there was a way that you could be barred from voting for your own club/stadium/fans. Anyway, my tuppence... LFC is over-rated, sure very "colourful on those Euro nights" but often dead for other times. Pompey do sing a lot and ring bells, but real atmosphere? The Bar-codes ? Not really, not at St James', but they are better away, but are a bit plastic. Makams, yes, pretty good atmosphere up there. Spurs made a hell of a noise on the telly at one of last season's UEFA games (can't remember which) and they do do that sometimes, like when they play the Arse. But the best has to be Goodison, though when there is something at stake. It's a strange place, can be like a library and then explodes. It's an angry, noisy atmosphere, intimidating (as many players have said) rather than a colourful, bell-ringing, flag-waving one.

I agree with Luke. Stadium of light for me. I've been twice, once to see the mighty hammers and once to see the game against turkey. It was mad. I think the FA chose the stadium of light for a reason, the fans create an amazing atmosphere.

I can see where Ade is coming from with his comment....I too am a West Brom season ticket holder but I gotta be honest...the hawthorns can be a noisy place to go...especially when we are playing the derby games(like most places I guess ) but at times it can go pretty flat..but traveling away to follow the Albion is mental....I reckon we are far noisier away from the Hawthorns...but I thought Sunderland was a fantastic atmospher when I last went there...maybe not the Roker roar...but definately a great place to watch a match...and for me ...Boro was the worst !!

The correct answer to this is fratton park, to the fulham fan who said that you outsang them...wasnt that the last game of the season when you had to win to stay up and they had nothing to play for!?

Anfield is always silent when i go there, all well and good cheering at the big european nights but cant be bothered when a small club like my reading go there. Same with Newcastle

Everton and Spurs always good to in my book, sunderland werent that bothered when i went, not so sure about the baggies.

Anyway for what its worth Portsmouth usually sing throughout.

A better question would be apart from your own team who has the best fans.

Oh and having looked on youtube FC united seem to be quite good fun

I think Portsmouth fans have become too comfortable in the Premiership. They created a good atmosphere in the early days but on a whole when they are compared to the top sides and the bigger stadia it's really a no brainer.

Last season their atmosphere seemed to be considerably poorer compared to recent years. Coupled with Harry Redknapp himself criticising the fans, a slight fall in attendance and the booing scenario I think they went down in a lot of peoples estimations. I would say Portsmouth are outside the top 5 for creating the best atmosphere, maybe it's more audible on the TV due to their fans being closer to the pitch. In the larger stadiums the audio receptors are turned down.

I have a friend who works for Sky sports as a cameraman, he said he was at a sunderland/newcastle game circa 2000. When one of the goals went in two of sound systems were actually damaged beyond repair from the roar that the supporters made.

He said he'd never known one to break, let alone two. It must have been some noise. I've been there on a few occasions, one was so so, the other time was seriously loud.

So my vote would be Stadium of Light number 1. St James 2 and Anfield as number 3.

Ged
2008-07-21 15:38:38 ET

A definition of "atmosphere" might be useful... in my book those places with NOISE (Like S'derland, Everton, sometimes Spurs) are the places, not those grounds like Fratton Park, Man City and Anfield where they roll out the flags, banners, blow-up and wave bananas and have a good sing-song... each to their own like, but WBA ? well I don't think the atmosphere there is that special at all.

jobo
2008-07-21 16:19:18 ET

Certainly not Goodison haha. They have no songs, no chants and no passion. Alls you hear at Goodison is swearing at referees when decisions go against them.

Some of the Greatest players today (E'to, Henry, even Giggs reckon Anfield is the best ground fot atmosphere). To say Portsmouth and Everton have a good atmosphere is embarrassing to the Premiership.

Inglebert
2008-07-21 16:30:36 ET

Up until last season the Brittania had never been full. I don't think Stoke can compete with the majority of football fans in the Premiership.Your hardcore support is so small. It must only be around 8,000. Around 5 or 6 Premiership teams could take that to an average away game.

Ged
2008-07-21 16:32:36 ET

Aha! seems you have some bias there... no "passion" at Goodison ? You can't be serious. That is the one thing they do have. Not many sing-songs, that's true, but passion in abundance. As for Anfield... come on, own up, you are a Liverpool fan. Quoting players is easy... the likes of Lampard, Petit, and even Mourinho, and going back Jack Charlton, all said that Goodison was intimidating. Yes, for scarf waving sing-songs on Euro nights it is Anfield (when all the foreigners are in) and for good old atmosphere it is Goodison. By the way, I support Crewe, but go to many grounds to watch games.

The Stadium of Light has a fantastic atmosphere! The noise and sheer passion generated by the fans make the stadium experience unforgettable. It's a shame about the Policing, which can be unnecessarily heavy-handed & inhospitable.

The stadium of light is by far the best atmosphere and im not just saying that coz im red and white, the sad thing is that the black and whites (newcastle fans) hate to admit it!! what will it be like if we get the stadium extended which it has plans for..(55,000) next stage then (63,000) last stage. its a great place to be if you havent been, try and make the trip there. not taking anything away from Arsenal fans coz they have a fantastic stadium and is probably the best in Europe, but this is all about atmosphere.

I am an Evertonian and think Ged's comment (above) I think is fairly accurate.

He says..

"But the best has to be Goodison, though when there is something at stake. It's a strange place, can be like a library and then explodes. It's an angry, noisy atmosphere, intimidating (as many players have said) rather than a colourful, bell-ringing, flag-waving one".

Goodison CAN be very quiet but it only takes a couple of 'bad' decisions and the place can very quickly become wonderfully hostile.

Earlier in the year I went to watch Barcelona V Espanyol at the Nou Camp (Camp Nou...whatever).

There were about 85,000 there who whistled (a bit) when things didn't go their way and (oddly) waved newspapers at the final whistle ((0-0), but to be honest I was a bit disappointed. It didn't have a quarter of the passion or intimidation factor of Goodison Park (when we do decide to make some noise).

Spurs very similar.

I have been to quite a few Premier Grounds over the years. I am a Sunderland season ticket holder and am proud of the noise the fans generate on match day. The Away fans always tend to help generate a good atmosphere due to the fact of both sets of fans giving it what for to each other. But all fans are always welcome up here I think you would love it if you get the chance a good friendly bunch (policing can be shocking as one of the posters mentioned).

I always enjoy Anfield & Goodison maybe because I think the scousers are a great bunch but always a trip there. Best atmosphere I would say us (which I am bound too but in all honesty I believe it is as alot of the above posters think. I would then say Everton followed by Portsmouth then West Ham.

Good Luck guys for the season ahead.....

The old grounds are the best...Goodison, Fratton Park, White Hart Lane, Upton Park etc. No standing has taken away a lot of the real passion, too many grounds have become souless ( I actually fell asleep at Old Trafford, too far away from the pitch and too quiet)

Teams should always look to redevelop the old grounds rather than move to new stadia.

My twopenneth.... Goodison under the floodlights, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up

I am an Evertonian so i probably do have a biased opinion, however Goodison can be a truely special place when the fans rally the team, one game stood out last season which was against Fiorentina (an emotional expierence for all us blues watching), the noise was unreal, everyone in all all four stands of this historic ground were singing and after the game my ears were still ringing the next day.

The stadium of light does sound good however, and even i have to admit the Kop in a merseyside derby is immpressive.

COYB!

2008-07-22 07:49:13 ET

Worst atmosphere I have experienced is the Reebok. Half full and generally half hearted. West Ham and Portsmouth are cracking atmospheres. Newcastle have the best away support in the country no doubt about that but at home they are poor. I think this is due to the fact that the stands are so big and there is no core stand for hardcore supporters! Plus the away fans are put about 3 miles away form the pitch!! I agree with Steveh tho Goodison under the floodlights is immense! The roar is unreal! Fiorentina last season summed it all up. Im an everton fan by the way.

Behind Wigan I have to say Ewood Park has the worst atmosphere. I went there last season, and even though it was a night game, I can safely say the atmosphere of the blackburn fans is pitiful, the only noise coming from the home fans was the few bairns that were playing tag in the deserted stands.

2008-07-22 09:41:42 ET

I am a sunderland fan and i have been going there all my life and the stadium of light has to be the best in the premier league so i woould say the stadium of light as (1st) anfield (2nd) goodison park (3)

AC86 said "Newcastle have the best away support in the country no doubt about that but at home they are poor". Can't agree with that first bit at all. Agree with the 2nd bit though. Many clubs have great away support. And away it is always easier to get an atmosphere going as the hard-core are there and they are all grouped together in a sector or stand. For example, though MU are quiet at OT they have great and loud away support (and this from an Evertonian). The Bar-Codes get drunk, take their shirts off in the rain, almost all wear replica shirts, etc, but are in no way the best away.

Well i'm a liverpool fan and the best i've been to (apart from anfield) is the Hawthorns. Went a few years ago and i think we were beating them 5/6- 0 and the place was still rocking and didnt stop. That said its not just euro nights that are amazing at anfield, like any stadium i suppose, can get flat...but when its rocking it ROCKING

Hawkeye
2008-07-28 11:12:13 ET

Yes. The Stadium of Light IS the loudest stadium in the country at the moment. And why shouldn't it be? We have local and international legends taking the two most important roles of the club. We have something to shout about!

The atmosphere seems to drive the players on. Why do you think we were renouned last season for our late minute goals? Because we failed to give up when the odds were against us (plus most of the second halves were played towards the home end!) Keano has connections as well. As much as Dwight Yorke may have passed his sell-by-date, he brought the experience the Roy would have given had he signed as a player for us. Those connections link us to fantastic clubs, like Manchester United. Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson drove us to the Championship trophy and ensured that we could thwart most opposition attacks in the Prem.

I feel the older stadiums, ones with more history behind them, will do well in this poll. The newest ones, like the Emirates won't authoritate themselves in the minds of the home support as they haven't formed that emotional link with it yet.

im a die hard evertonian and i agree with most people on here goodison can be amzaing always gets the hairs on my neck stand up and one decision can change the whole atmosphere but i think we are far better on the road always take sell outs or next to sell outs even boro new years day was sold out although most ppl missed it due to hang overs i assume.... i went to 80% off aways last season and the teams i rated was newcastle and manc city i was shocked by anfield not being bitter cos in europe the kop looks great but at the derby last season they had around 100-150 coaches for a home game and on there p.a a message saying for home supporters travelling home the the m6 (i fink) will be closed they need to rid them selfs of the cockneys n foriegners and maybe they could compete botlon blackburn wigan myt aswell watch from home cos its an awful atmosphere there and as for chelsea in d carling cup both legs dey wer shoking for a "BIG" club old trafford is lyk a tourist lodge no passion atall and at the emirates alf of us wer avin a sing song and didnt relised they had scored it was that quite clubs like everton newcastle man city totneham sunderland and even fulham always genarate a good too great atmosphere regardless although the teams like liverpool utd chelsea and arsenal only turn up when something is at stake lyk liverpool took 550 fans to marsielle this past week everton to 8000 to russia wich is far more difficult to get to far more expensive and also we took 1200 to nuremberg as for those fa recordings they dont count for anythink cos they dont take into account whats at stake for some teams in the game lyk we could be playin bolton wich would be reasonable and liverpool could be playin utd it doesnt take a genius to work out that ders more need 2 cause an atmosphere at certain matches more than others and also look at the amount of people each ground can hold ... COUB p.s boro are underrated but bang to much not enough variation of singin dey prefer 2 band n giv it the der der derer

Stoke, Spurs and Villa have g8 support, every game. Liverpool, Everton, Pompey, newcastle, Sunderland has good overall support, home and away.

Actually none English team can compare with turkey, greek fans etc, on regular Pl-games every arena is shite.

LFC didn´t take many to Marsielle cos many of them were there 7 months earlier, think it was 5000-6000 against Madrid. Not space for more.

i think u cant decide an atmosphere on 2-3 games u see real atmosphere when theres something to play for and the team needs the 12th man. ofcourse the real loyal ones allways make noise, but to see the best of the fans u really need to see them at wembley, european game or any vital game... even a relegation battle. i support wolves and think on there day everton are as loud as any1 followed by liverpool and portsmouth

TT. If you are not a liverpool fan i will show my arse to the queen.

Goodison is sometimes a library but on night games or against rival teams such as liverpool man utd (and villa now) the atmosphere is just electric. For the Dan Gosling derby i thought goodison was going to collapse when he scored. But that isn't hard since Goodison is as rusty as me Grandads hip replacement.

I went to the Anfield fa cup derby and it was just silence, the only time the liverpool fans made noise was when 'you'll never walk alone' came on. Oh and they sang Ste Gerrard name for about 10 seconds after he scored.

Stoke have by far got the best away fans, OMG they never stopped singing and they were so loud you would think they were at home. But Everton and Liverpool have got to be a close second and third for away support.

arsenal have a shocking atmosphere since they moved to their new stadium. they 2 songs 'arsenal, arsenal, arsenal' and 'we're by far the greatest team' and thats it. When they came to goodison this year they were very quiet for an away game. I suppose stoke have the loadest ground, but we'll have to see what it is like that if they establish themselves in the league. btw everton fans do create a great atmosphere when they are up for it. if you saw the semi-final of the fa cup you would understand. furthermore, both wenger and mourinho said that everton have one of the most intimidating grounds they have managed in - and you can check that

im an MUFC stretford ender n ill tell ya now, success and the all seater regulations has sucked a lot of the passion out of the place. obviously there is still the hard core who stand in the stretford end, (the real MANCs) who do there best to create anatmosphere despite the stewards and the daytrippers! there is the occasional good atmosphere like on derby days andeuro nights n the tottenham second half this season.

havin said that i honestly think (despite being slightly biased) that our away support is amongst the best in the country. i went to the local away games over the past 2 seasons; bolton, blackburn, wigan, city, stoke, everton, liverpool and hull on the last day.

it hurts for me to say it, but liverpool made a lot of noise, weather thats because it was a huge match which they won i dont know. overall id say stoke was the best on boxing day, and after everton scored at goodison the crowd were massively up for it.

bolton wigan and blackburn were awful n apart from a few bangs on the drum and 'we support our local team' we didnt hear a peep. btw MUFC is my local team, and the fukin glory huntin armchair scum piss me off as much as u lot!!!
