When the word is used in that way; no offense is meant or taken. When I was a teenager, a black friend of the family told me that there were N's in every race. I never heard this man use the N word - he was older and the word was not used by his generation(he was college educated). I understand how upsetting a derogatory use of this word can be to a white person......especially one who feels comradship with every race. I am white and 59 years old. What are we thinking if only one group of people can use certain words or phrases then how do we instruct the children in school or for you its out of bounds but for you its ok because of skin color or country of origin. The way I see it if we believe that certain words are bad for the overall relations of the races then we should require no one to use it period. Racism exists in America because Black people won't let go of the things of the past and move forward. The N word is not about color, it is a "class" of people, beyond color, who are the lowest of the lowest, as I was taught growing up. It is improper to use it because it wields too much pain and degradation. We should remove the word from English Language and from every dictionary and forbide its use by ANYONE, regardless of color. The mechanisms of self-oppression are based in large part on words. Words have power and effect and consequences. We as a society will not and cannot ever get passed racial issues, especially the "n" word - Why? First of all, we all live in the same world and anyone who attempts to proclaim otherwise is making an ignorant argument. We all know slavery was one of the greatest tragedies this country has seen. However, for African Americans to act like they deserve to be treated differently because of what happened is wrong. They rightfully fought for equality and got it; but they now argue to be treated special. I was not a slave owner nor was any other person alive today. So, I do not expect them to act like I was nor do I expect them to act like they PERSONALLY went through it. I WILL treat every person the same until they prove to me they don't deserve it. I would not use the word myself because I do not choose to. If Whoopi and the black community choose to embrase the word than so be it. I'm not sure why anyone would decide to embrase a word that has such an awful meaning and that was used to inflict great emotional pain but the choice to do so is their decision. I can change my world and my surroundings/environment only. And, hopefully, my decisions impact the world in a positive and loving way. The only way to change things is to take responsibility for oneself and always strive to be your best. Let the rest go and have faith.
This is just another example of rules made for some of us and not others. Elizabeth is trying to do the right thing in the way she is a role model for her kids. The other two, well it is apparent from the show what conversations must go on in their house with their kids. As I tell my kids - rules are made for people in our house - everyone else gets to do what they want and get away with it, but we will be better people for following the rules of our land and society. Even though when we stop completely at a stop sign we run the risk of getting rear-ended by the car behind us that just wants to slow down but not follow the rules.

My daughter , now 24, heard this word for the frist time when she was 12 (certainly not from me) . I took great care , and pride, in keeping it OUT of my house. I watched The View today and was appalled at Whoopie and Sherry's double standards. Whoppie was out of control and should be fired. Whoopie used the actual "N" word multiple times with NO regard or respect for Barbara, the show the audience or the viewers. How in heaven's name can Sherry condone her family and her using the "N" word out of endearment? I feel Sherry went way too far telling Barbara it was okay for her to use it but she better not hear it come out of her mouth. On a day when such an incredible man as "Tony Snow" who died from Colon Cancer was laid to rest it is sad to hear about a debate about the "N" word was the focus of THE VIEW for the audience today. Why is it okay for African Americans to use these words and not okay for white people? I am tired of the double standard that exists in this country. Not only this, but I happened to get stuck on a Trading Spouses episode on CMT where the black spouse from Jacksonville "traded" his wife to a white family north of New Orleans, who were affected by Katrina. I think Whoopi is missing the point; and it seems to be one that is commonly missed. You cannot have it both ways. That word must be either okay for all, or it isn't okay for any. To have it any other way perpetuates the idea that blacks are different. To say it is okay for blacks and whites is to say that it blacks are different; something they seem to not want to be. 'They' want to live in the 'white' world but seem to refuse the necessary requirements. You cannot have it both ways.
I personally feel that most of the people who are making comments are white people. But if you were to look at it from another prespective and take a long walk in the African Americans shoes you would see where Whoopi was coming from. We do not live in the same world. There are so many people treating us different in the society that we live in. The area of residence that we stay in is very different. The goverment helps to keep the other races residual area more profitable. There are so many things that make us as of black people mad and will never see the world the way that you do.
I'm definitely against the "N" word. It doesn't matter who says it; it's still extremely derogatory. Why do we feel the need to use a word that reminds us of the era of slavery? I don't understand why so many people choose to use offensive words like that. I agree with Elisabeth. How are we supposed to move forward when we keep using words like this?
I just moved to San Francisco a year and a half ago. This is what I deal with in almost every social setting. You can't ask how the weather is without it being "the administrations fault", I am not kidding you! This extreme liberal belief that are shoved down everyones throat, that leaves you speechless or in tears ( like Elizabeth) becasue it is beyond your comprehension the ambiguity and contradiction in so many statements from the extreme liberal. They will not even be quiet for a moment, to hear your beliefs. They just keep talking right through you if you are of a different opinion. This is definately BS. I am English/German American. I am sure the the African Americans until the end of time will feel that they are forever the victim. They are the only race on earth who have had such a plight....tongue in cheek. My relatives weren't even here in the US yet. People from Africa were here before my ancestors. But becasue of the "COLOR OF MY SKIN", I am paying a price now too??? Let's remember..."MAN CONVINCED AGAINST HIS WILL IS OF THE SAME OPINION STILL". SO even if we did everything they wish and then some it is never enough. People from Africa do not know how to be proud and humble they want to be victims. Sadly I do not think
