Ron Santo is pretty much hated by die-hard White Sox fans for dissing the team and its' fans after playing for the Sox in 1974. He is a HORRIBLE announcer, and there are plenty of people out here who are tired of him pandering to get into the HOF. He is NOT a Hall of Famer - and that has been made clear through nyumerous ballots.

Ron Santo should have a street around Wrigley Field named after him. The one running along the third base line would be perfect. Go Cubbies!

No disagreement here that Balbo must go. If Mr. Zorn wanted to run an unbiased survey of who the street should be named for, he should have listed the nominees, given the pros and cons for all, and let the voters decide. Instead he became another Tribune shill for Santo. No need to expound on that-- we've been reading that stuff in the Trib for 30+ years! No wonder that Santo is getting most of the votes. Zorn's next job should be running publicity for elections in Myanmar.
I voted for Cardinal Bernardin, a man of class and dignity. If Bishop Ford gets an expressway and Cardinal Mundelein got a whole town, why can't Joe Bernadin get a half mile?
Balbo is on the South Side-- how can you name a street on the South Side after a Cub? Santo was a hot dog on an underachieving team. He is a terrible announcer. I love to listen to the Cubs on the radio only because Pat Hughes is so great, and listening to Hughes (another man of class and dignity)patiently put up with Ronnie adds to his stature. I didn't attend many ball games in the 70's, but let me tell you about two of them. I was there at the home opener at Comiskey in 1974. When Santo was announced at his first at bat, the place was half cheers and half boos. Arguments broke out in the stands between the two factions. I was also there a few years later when a mid-season acquisition was announced for his first at bat. The whole place, including myself, rose at one for a standing ovation for Don Kessinger. Yup, another ex-'69 Cub. But Kessinger was another of those classy, dignified players (is there a theme here?), and not another Ronnie.
Santo is not a beloved player, marginally qualified for the HOF, and belongs solidly on the North Side where I grew up, not the South.
