If she starts campaigning for her husband then yes. But since Obama thinks that his wife should be off limits then so should Cindy McCain. But then if she starts campaigning for her husb and then she is no more off limits, just like Obama's wife is not off limits. NO matter what Obama says.

Cindy McCain is not running for President. She inherited her wealth from her family --- it's nobody's business what they gave her. We do need to know how much John McCain and Obama have "earned" and all their "business"-dealings.

Repubs = Morons

Remember when Republicans whined about John Kerry's wife not releasing details about her wealth? This is the exact same situation, if Kerry had to release hers 4 years ago then Cindy McCain has to release hers now. Typical Repub behavior, it was blasphemy for Kerry to not release hers but okay for Cindy McCain because "she's not running for president". Idiots.

Of course she should. Her finances are his finances, since they're husband and wife. McCain reaps the benefits of it any other time but should disregard it's significance when running for president? I don't think so.

my honest thought is that John McCain will NOT be the GOP canidate come november. he will have a well thought out reason not to run(which is already in place), and a new and exciting canidate will emerge. when to pull him though...

This is simply another attempt by a woman WHO CAN NOT TALK (That would be Greta VanSustern) to get another woman WHO DOES NOT HAVE TO TALK to HER (That would be Greta) ... Just more agitation by a lawyer who no longer practices law ... to stir up something for her own benefit ... Mrs. McCain has NO reason to model her life by anything Greta says or demands or agitates for.

The McCains have kept their finances separate - right down to a prenuptual. They have also been very careful not to "cross the line" of using her assets for any of his campaigns. My understanding is he pays for the use of her company's jet when utilized, and that none of his campaign funds are coming from her assets. If there is real evidence of impropriety than it should be investigated - otherwise its off limits. It reminds me of the Clintons using the IRS for character assasination and intimidation of their rivals - whether based on fact or not. I'm tired of D's making running for public office so unbearable!!

It is nobody's business how much money Cindy McCain has or what she earns annually. If she were the one runnung for presidant then she should have to declare it. Is anyone asking Obama's wife to declare her wealth or income? If they are, they shouldn't be asking her either. Campaign finances should be an open book. The McCain/Fiengold campaign finance bill needs to be reworked. As of now certain organizations are banned from advertising while others have an open opportunity. Either all open or all banned.

No way should she be forced to open that up unless she is paying for campaigning. Why don't we ask Obama what to do, he wants change right? what change, nobody knows, but he sure gives great speeches so we should vote for him, right? Bama Blows.

Whether Cindy McCain is worth $1,000,000 or a $100,000,000 it makes little or no difference. She and her husband John are wealthy. Let's just accept that and move on. I'm looking for a reason as to why knowing her worth is important. Are we just nosy, curious or is there a reason why it's important? Does it matter? If so why and how is it going to change how a president presides over the country during his/her term(s)?

The only reason for her to release financial information is if she donated money to his campaign.

elena

As has been mentioned, Ms. Heinz did not and was rather rude to anyone who suggested she do so. Bill Clinton never disclosed the donors to his library. Sure would have been great to see if any donors matched his list of pardons.

Fox=Lies
Jul 3, 2008 2:59pm ET

Jeez, could most of these responses be any more stupid. Not surprising on Fox. McCain does use his wife's assets. The Obama's file joint returns so transparancey is there...and Michelle Obama does not have independent wealth. Repugnicans are at their hypocritical best once again. Complained about Kerry's wife's assets and now that the spot light is on one of their own "stepford" wives it's a whole different argument. "don't even vote for a repug for dogcatcher, it only encourages them"!

All I have to say on this matter is that whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, the second you decide to run, your life is an open book. That includes children (as we know with Dick Cheney's daughter), parents, grandparents and yes, wives and husbands. There is just no getting around it so she would be better off giving the information instead of letting people think that she has something to hide. Joy Madison, AL

It doesn't matter how much money she makes as they keep their finances separate and have a history of such behavior. She is not running, he is. She is letting him run a campaign without trying to take center stage. Let's honor the facts and stop trying to make a story out of nothing at all. American media screws up the issues by inserting these stupid little side tales that end up taking over the real issues. Stay focused on the issues that matter - this one doesn't.

Ed Blokdijk

The American slogan, "Those with the most toys win". We don't care what they know or who they are, if you have the money you are in like flint. Let's see Hillary threw in $20M of her own money to get a job that pays $300K a year. Sure she does. Now is our new President going to dictate policy? If so he is a dictator and we are a Democratic country so that will not happen. So who calls the shots, Congress? We vote practically the same old timers in every election. Most voters don't even know much about their records, a familiar name shows up on the ballot and people put their check mark down. These are the people who say yeah or neah. Yet we spend so much on a Presidential election to make sure we pick the "right man or woman" a person who can primarily try to steer Congress in a certain direction and that is about it. Clearly they have the right to Veto a bill, but the people have the right to vote him or her out of their position as well. Perhaps here it is important to have money, you may be able to buy some votes. If we want leaders to run our country as we see fit, do we care if a person does it with a dime in their pocket or do we rather pick a person with multi millions in their pocket? If it does not matter to you then leave it alone. If it matters for whatever reason to you, go ahead and ask Cindy to disclose her finances. That is the great thing about this country that our men and women died for in our fight for freedom. We can speak our opinion without fear of a public hanging.

I suppose those people who want to redistribute wealth in America would want to have everyone publish their financial information. I, for one, feel that a private person and any associated private information should remain so.

Out of 3,432 voters only 25 took time to post a comment. Americans obviously consider this a low priority issue since, as a nation, we have much larger hurdles to leap. I believe everyone knows what I'm talking about.

Nancy
Jul 4, 2008 4:46pm ET

Personally I don't care how much she has, but it does appear that is not all that thrifty with what she has. While the rest of us (at least 90% of us) have to live on much, much less, I am wondering why John is getting $45,000/yr from Social Security. You say he earned it? Why not just leave it in the Social Security Fund and live on the hundreds of millions he already has. Those of us who are struggling to live on $12,000/$15,000 a year (and I worked just as hard as he did to earn mine) should not have to be concerned that our Social Security System is in trouble. People like McCain who are draing it out when they absolutely don't need it, is just one of the reasons it is going broke.

Greta, the vote is in. Drop it; no one except lefties cares to know Cindy McCains private finances. What we do know is that she apparetly uses it for the good of children. (Operation Smile) Nuf said! Concetrate on Cooper and CNN, that is worth your staff's efforts. Walter

Cindy McCain has always filed separately. It is her right and his candidacy should not change that.

Typical White Person
Jul 6, 2008 9:01am ET

The fact that their finances have been separate the entire marriage and that there is a prenup and file separate taxes is good enough for me. That is her money and that is very clear. This is a stupid issue. If the other candidates file together, then oh well. More importantly, did Obama claim any of the money he surely got for Trinity Church, from the real estate deal, or from any other underhanded Chiago under the table deal. I think not.

As long as Cindy and John McCain are doing nothing illegal, her financial situation should remain as private as possible. However, she could use a new hair do. Her current hair style makes her look old and matronly.

The difference here is that the McCain couple have signed a prenup. Cindy's money is her business and even John can't touch that. It is NOT any of anyone's business what Cindy has. She is a beautiful woman and has been groomed since birth on fundraising abilities and demeanor. She actually has brains enough to knock the socks right off of Barak Hussein, Hillary and even John if need be. Just leave her alone and focus on more important things like the other candidate's inexperience, hatred, lack of knowledge, and two faceness. Our country is headed for total chaos if this idiot should win. Karen Lafayette, LA

Cindy McCain is not running for President. John is running. He has always released his financials along with his birth certificate. Barack Obama needs to release his real birth certificate, if he has one. He also needs to release his selective service registration. He was required by law to register and he should show America that he complied. Michelle doesn't need to release anything.

Cindy McCain shouldn't have to declare her finances as they are separate from his. They have a pre-nuptial agreement that her assets remain separate. The Wall Street Journal wrote an article on Cindy McCain and still very few people know: Cindy McCain graduated from Southern Cal with a Special-Needs degree.When her father died she became involved in his beer distributing firm. Sales have doubled since her takeover. She is active with the 'Halo" Trust -to clear mines, provide water and food in war ravaged and developing countries and travels the world to these countries, on a detonation team, clearing land mines and is involved on the Board.The McCain's have a Family Foundation for children's causes. In 1991,Cindy McCain came across a girl in an orphanage in Bangladesh. Mother Teresa implored [her] to take the baby with a severe cleft palate. She did, without first telling her husband. The McCain's adopted this girl who has had dozens of operations to repair her cleft palate and other medical problems.The McCain's have a 19-year old son serving in Iraq, another son in the Naval Academy. And a daughter just graduated from Comumbia Univ. Cindy McCain will join the overseas mission of 'Operation Smile" a charity for corrective surgery on children's faces. Michele Obama says they give to "Care"- Cindy McCain is on the 'Care" Board of Directors. Isn't it amazing how quiet the media is on this woman's accomplishments and attributes- she seems to be more capable than Hillary or Obama. If McCain is elected, we would be getting two for the price of one as Cindy McCain is a woman with business and International experience. She certainly fits the image of what Americans and the Europeans have come to associate with the attributes and quality the USA "First Lady" projects -Bright, articulate, savvy and always a lady. Say anything you want about George Bush, but no one can denegrate Laura Bush; she is an exemplary "First Lady," in manners and style. "Class" would be a one-word description. And if by some god-awful trick of fate and the McCain's are not in the White House - it will usher in a new era sans all the of attributes we have associated with a First Lady, since Pat Nixon, who was quiet and supportative on to Jackie Kennedy who set the pace for the gracious manners,and the abundant qualities we have come to expect in a President's wife.

Why is this important? We should all remember that it is not what is important that is important but what is unimportant that is important. Her money is meaningless. Maybe if she and John have enough money they won't steal from the White House like the Clintons did.
