Both are outrageous. However, we need gas and can get cheaper coffee elsewhere.

Most Everyone NEED Gasoline to get to work, hospital, doctor appointments and $4.00/gallon is OUTRAGEOUS but you DO NOT NEED Starbucks!!! Getting that cup of coffee for $4.00 is your choice but getting gasoline is NECESSITY!

You can buy a cup of coffee somewhere else for a buck, you can't buy a gallon of gas somewhere else (other than the middle east or Hugoville). I have _never_ understood the starbucks mentality.

one is a must the other a want. If you want a coffee - shop around not hard to find a nice coffee in US or go home and invite a friend over and make some but gas is still so cheap in this country I dont understand the problem.

We can not put coffee in our gas tanks to go to work or take a member of our family to the hospital when the need arise. WOW

people that spend $4.00 for a cup of coffee, must have no problems with $4.00 a gallon for gas. These people could spend $1.50 for a cup of good coffee and give $2.50 to charity for people that don't have food.

Starbucks needs to ditch the Pike Place! I recommend everyone in the Northern Virginia area to go to Greenberry's where you can get better COFFEE (or great tea) and a different kind every day for less. That's a real coffee (and tea) business that concentrates on getting good beans from all coffee regions in the world. Even Borders and other gas stations sell better coffee than Pike Place! Variety is the spice of life. Why the same old stuff day after day? No wonder SBUX is sinking.

$4.oo gallon of gas is an outrage we that live in rual areas have to drive to our places of business and we can live without coffee but not the fuel to get to work

Peggy

Both four dollars for a gallon of gas or a cup of coffee is outrageous. But there is a solution to the gas problem, a short term followed by a long term one. If I want to splurg and spend $4.00 on coffee, that should be my choice without having to worry about the cost of gas.

Like most of the comment's Fuel is a Must have and coffee is a want. I really think we need to go after the speculators that are lining there pockets with our money.

Let's put this into perspective. $4 for a 16 oz cup of Starbucks equates to $32 per US gallon! Starbucks is a luxury, but all too often, I see folks sipping their Starbucks lattes while complaining about paying $4 a gallon for gas. Get real! Get your priorities straight before you complain about gas!

Boutique coffee has always been overpriced, gas prices HAVEN'T but rises at at an abominable rate. Stop buying gas, the country comes to screatching halt. STOP BUYING BOUTIQUE COFFEE AND YOU SAVE MONEY AS WELL AS PROBABLY LOSE SOME WEIGHT!

Wendy

First of all, Missouri, I CAN spend $4.00 on coffee and don't WANT to spend $1.50 AND, I can still give $2.50 to someone who doesn't have food. Yours is a dumb argument. Second, I'm with everyone else who's saying that gas is a necessity, coffee, not so much. Moreover, you don't buy one gallon of gas; typically, you buy one cup of coffee so this isn't a true apples to apples comparison. When I buy gas, I have to buy 20 gallons at a time to fill my tank. I can drink my Starbucks once or twice a week, if that, and spend 10% or less than what I do to fill up my tank. Third, to the first post, get over it. Hillary LOST. If Rev. Wright, Father Flagler and the numerous other far left wackos didn't put Obama out of this race, whatever you've posted won't anymore than the Gennifer Flowers and Whitewater allegations that came out during the Clintons' first two presidential runs cost them the presidency. We're on Billary overload and nothing anyone can do can change that. It wasn't sexism or anything else that cost Hillary this election; just her horrible character. Most Americans HATE her and would rather have almost anyone else than her for president. Period. Personally, I can't stand any of them so I'm exercising my right to vote by choosing NOT to be responsible for helping put any of them into the White House!

A cup of coffee is a want, something you don't have to have. I drink coffee, but not starbucks. I don't care for it. Gas is a necessity, and 4 bucks a gallon is pretty bad when it take 10 or more gallons to fill your vehicle. We don't go as much and with groceries going up...we are finding out we can get by on less. The price of gas has caused us to change our priorities.

Hi Greta, hope you are doing well. Actually I believe BOTH are Outrageous AND Ridiculous, of course one being expensive A lot longer than the other. But what I see is this, people were willing to pay the ridiculous price(and still are) for coffee but... there are alot persons still driving Suvs and paying the high price for gasoline. So, in conclusion I believe people pay MORE for what's MORE important to them until it's challenged by something else even MORE important... do I need the coffee or do I need the gasoline for where I need to go ? It's the old `NO BRAINER', unless you're RICH and then you can have BOTH and Merrely go about your way. Smile!!!

$4 for a gas is more outrageous than a $4 cup of coffee. You can skip the coffee, go elsewhere or make your own. But gas is a necessity and the only way to get out of this mess is to buckle down and start drilling for our own oil here on our own land. Better sooner than later when gas gets to be $8 per gallon! Wind and solar are fine, but they aren't gonna move your car anytime soon.

So, where are the coffee supporters in this argument? I guess the state is right on, if you don't worry abou t$4.00, you're not going to worry about $4.00 gal gas. Wendy - please vote. Even if it's to vote for the lesser of evils!

Starbucks Mocha Frappachinos are awesome and the perfect pick me up when tired, but it takes gas to go to work to pay for them. Hence, I need the gas more than the treat!

I can do w/o Starbucks for sure! So can you - make your own latte. We must have gasoline...it's a fact of life these days. I wonder how many times a week the average CEO from the oil companies or members of Congress go to the grocery store to see how high prices really are. I would love for them to live two weeks in OUR world. They would do something immediately then...they live by the rule "if it ain't hurtin' me there's nothin' wrong!"

Coffee is optional....Gas is not!

Gasoline is required to get to work, the store and often children to school. Coffee is optional, a luxury decision. Gasoline is not an option.

I live in Jerusalem. Gas works out to $7.20 an American gllon but we have to buy it and use it. Coffee I can make myself which is why Starbucks failed in Israel several years ago. We have coffee bars but not at THAT price per cup. Get our priorities right. I need to getto and from work and I can drink water, by carf cannot.

Jul 2, 2008 2:32am ET

I really don't understand why people have to have Starbucks coffee. You can make a strong cup of coffee at home, it's not that hard. 4.60 a gallon ( desiel) is tuff to pay at the pump. We need to drill for oil, once we do the speculators and Arabs will drop the prices..

Dwayne Vincentie
Jul 2, 2008 3:23am ET

I don't drink coffee, and drive 1/2 as much with my car-so the cost per gallon is approximately $2.35. I travel back and forth to and from China for business and realized a simple fact. It doesn't take a 2000lb car to transport my 185lb body. It's simple physics- the more mass you have to move the more GAS it takes to move it. Do like they do in China, drive a scooter. It works for them- their killing us. Remember when Wal-Mart was proud to sell "Made in USA" goods. Now they proudly serve up Chinese imports telling us to save money and live happy. I'd rather live happy and buy local. Coffee, clothes, whatever. We all understand that if it is 'Made in the USA', the money 'Stays in the USA'.

Corrine
Jul 2, 2008 12:57pm ET

Most definitlely the "GAS". I can buy a can of coffee and make my own where the only place I can fill my car is at these overpriced gas stations. I can leave the coffee but unfortunately NOT the gas!

Olga
Jul 3, 2008 12:15pm ET

Ths issue here is that you don't have to buy the $4 coffee but you MUST buy the gas - there is no way around it. You cannot compare coffee with gas. One you need to survice, go to work, and keep warm in winter the other is just a 'spoil me ' kind of thing.
