Please don't paint a picture that having a green card is a high crime, a person is highly disloyal to Taiwan. Green Card is to allow person to have a permanent residency. It is unlike having dual citizenship. If there are a lot of Taiwanese (even to ordinary Taiwanese) possessing Green Cards I would say the cause of it was due to the previous administration causing anxiety to Taiwanese because former President Chen frequently challenged China resulting in Taiwanese fearing that a war may break out anytime. Also because of his inept administration the opportunity for Taiwanese to live a comfortable and better lives (getting better jobs, expanding businesses) was dimmer year by year. Taiwan is about to slide in oblivion from a powerful little Dragon. Taiwanese have to find alternative to seek refuge should a war break out. Not that Taiwanese is not willing to fight for the country but unnecessary provoking, seeking and calling for a fight/war is folly in the extreme.
The green card controversy will most definitely not affect my support for the new administration. My support will solely base on the performance of the new administration on the economic and environmental issues that matter the people the most: whether the campaign pledges are turned into policies, how effectively they are executed, and the extent of incorruptibility the administration demonstrates. The green card controversy, though disturbing, is hardly an issue for most Taiwanese I talked to, and will be easily resolved by passing a law clearly defining the do's and don'ts of the Cabinet members and all related civil servants.
Reference Michelle comments. You say it right and I can't agree with you more. And for those who made Green Card an issue I say, Don't make mountain out of mole hill. Political parties using Green Card as a political capital seem very hollow.
