I fount D&D4e to be an improvement over 3e, and that was an improvement over 2e. However this only holds true for the core rulebooks. In each proceeding edition adding the many optional books and specialties unbalances the system and makes it increasingly unwieldy. I expect the same to happen as WoTC releases additional material. Which they will do. My preferred RPG is currently Savage Worlds which is in my opinion a more elegant system, and is also much less expensive.
