Sure the Earth is made up of 3/4 water....great! But seldom do we realize that approximately 2% of this water can be utilized by humans for drinking, agriculture and all the other activities which require fresh water (not to mention oil and other water-intensive industrial operations). About 20% of the world's population does not have access to safe, potable water...and of course, that 20% does not live in developed nations. Most infant deaths are associated with water-borne diseases such as cholera. Having the technology to convert salt water to fresh water would alleviate so many of the world's problems. In fact, there are several ventures underway to achieve such results.
