One problem with debates is folks come into them in two camps and out of them mostly in the same two camps. Anything that provides for political discourse where we can actually hear and "see" our various world views would help heal the many partisan wounds in our political culture. Call it what you will: dialogue, town hall, conversation would make for more productive campaigns.

As a partisan Democrat, whose candidate should excel in the format, I prefer a return to Lincoln-Douglas.
Obama will politely kick ass.
