What age do you think it's appropriate for kids to get a cell phone?

7-14 is fair for having a cell phone based on security, meaning personal safety and the ability to call for help if being bullied or stalked from leaving school grounds or even getting accidentally separated from parents in a mall/carnival. Obviously, 14+ will equate to socialization 'needs'. I would believe any age before 7 yrs old just isn't going to work out or will it? One thing for sure is that the expense of lost and/or damaged phones will be high. 7-10 is risky also, but the majority of children are fairly bright and can be taught early responsibility within that age bracket.

If a child is given the responsibility of walking home from school unchaperoned by an adult, then a cell phone at that age is appropriate. A cell phone can be make to be a communication radio [via call-access restrictions], is a necessity in the event there's an accident, a child abduction or attempt, separation in a crowd, bullying, or change in school dismissal time.

The calls made and associated cost is negligible as almost all cell phones can be call-restricted so the child can dial only certain numbers and receive calls from certain numbers as well as 911. My son can call and receive calls from me, his mother, two caretakers and 911...that's it. I have a prepaid plan and the 15 minutes I buy per month are enough for the use of this communication radio which is what it is, not a typical cell phone where endless texting and chatting takes place.
