Interesting poll question. Who came up with it? It’s such a huge endeavor to do what Robby is doing and be successful. Again, it’s takes drive and excellent people around him to pull it off. I'm glad to see most everybody out there recognizes this in fast motion.
I had to select "Both" in the poll because I have been a fan of Robby's for so many years dating back to his days in Indy Car. However, I have become an even greater fan due to my utmost respect for Robby as an owner. He has taken on as great a task of anyone out there and he is succeeding. While I would love to see him in the top 12 or even top 20 in points, you cannot diminish the fact that his team is still mostly sponsored for the year which is more than what other multi-car teams with greater factory support could say. I would continue to support any organization or firm that sponsors RGM!
Beyond the above, I admire Robby for his demonstration this year of his ability to respond appropriately to incredible pressure and disappointment. Some may say this was learned behavior. So what; it just shows that Robby is an apt student.
Consider this: On Jan. 1, he had a Dakar team which was, without exaggeration, a power. He had $4.5 Million invested. In mid-January, the race evaporated, along with, potentially, his investment. He made his views on this known, and then turned to Daytona. He placed in the top 10, which could help mightily in qualifying for all the rest of the NASCAR races this year. NASCAR promptly hit him with a potentially devastating points penalty for something he didn’t do. His whole NASCAR operation was in the balance. He appealed, maintained quietly that he didn’t do it, and accepted the support of his friends.
The result: Robby and BJ Baldwin participated in the Central Europe Rally (the replacement for Dakar) and performed remarkably, as well as being the toast of the event because of their openness and enthusiasm – and their Hummers. I have to believe the sponsors, particularly GM, were delighted with the very favorable coverage of Robby and BJ in a country – Hungary --that actually might have some members of its populace that could afford their products (cf. Mauretania). As for the Daytona situation, Robby prevailed in the end and his points were restored. He never whined, he simply stuck to the point until he prevailed.
All of this took strength of character and self-possession that would be remarkable in anyone. But to do it all with the charm and grace that Robby demonstrated shows just how extraordinary a person he is.
I am a small business owner and Robby is my nascar Hero, any sponsor who deals with small business owners could recruit a VERY loyal fan base.
I drink Coors light but I buy Jim Beam For Presents and partys for only one reason, THEY SPONSOR MY DRIVER.
