It is about time for OHSU to take this important step to formally recognize valuable members of the faculty who have contributed greatly to this university through primarily teachings and clinical services.
I think OHSU should not create yet another caste system that can reduce opportunity.
I think we have moved beyond the point of worrying about creating classes among the faculty. The current application our "universal" P&T guidelines assures that we will lose some of the people we desperately need to keep. We must find ways to adequately recognize the value of the contributions by the faculty members with the heaviest clinical and teaching responsibilities, particularly those who have committed themselves to an intellectual and scholarly approach to their work and who have attained a high level of expertise and recognition.
It is my sense that clinician educators do not feel valued compared to researchers. Changing the title will not correct the underlying culture and potentially would worsen the situation. Working as a clinician at OHSU has many challenges compared to working at a community site. Clinician educators are regulary not given FTE compensation for their teaching.
The problem I see is not including teaching as a major component of the clinical professor series. Why would this separate series be made and then ignore the one area that really distinguishes academic clinicians? It appears this will still reward research at the expense of recognizing great teaching, while it should be able to recognize and reward those who excel at either or both, and at a minimum should require a teaching component, including both classroom teaching as well as bedside/rounds/conference teaching. I agree with the previous post about lack of recognition for teaching in terms of FTE. Such a new series could be valuable if these issues are addressed.
I think this option should be available for clinical faculty whose focus is on delivery of patient care and education. This would complement the research facutly series. However, I think that the majority of our MD faculty should be recruited into the regular series and be expected to do scholarly activities in addition to teaching and clinical care activities.
If we want to increase the diversity of our University in regards to faculty, I think increasing venues for promotion that recognize importance of diversity of talents (teaching, clinical care, research, outreach) will be helpful. The clinical faculty series could help in this area. I do agree with an earlier comment that if this tract is considered, teaching should be a strong emphasis.
