Should celebs sing the national anthem?

I would rather hear a vocally gifted member of the military sing the National Anthem. Most of the military members that I have heard sing it at sporting events have done a great job.

  • Lil - 12 years ago

Steve (from 6 hours ago) you are THE man of the hour! I don't know where you got the statement you made but it makes more sense that any other comment given on this site ever could. MY America IS beautiful and should always remain that way and if you want to make fun of it by singing the National Anthem off key, half naked, etc., then you have my permission to leave and not come back. Oh, and I'll even help pay for your ticket...............

  • Arlene - 12 years ago

Hey Judy Layne, have news for you, rock stars are NOT talented singers. They are awful in performing our National Anthem. Hire real talent, real singers like an Opera singer. Linda Ronstadt was an Opera singer before she later changed her genre. Now, she has a beautiful voice!

  • Bama Jmiltonburkett03@gmail.comamma - 12 years ago

Why is it always a celebrity singing the National Anthem? Why can't they just get a local to sing it instead. Who knows they might just find the next Super Star. Reba McIntire was discovered singing it at a rodeo, Mariah Carey sang it at an NBA game. Come on Man! yall can do better than Christina or Steven. "Super Bowl X Factor" . Please tell me yall can do better.

  • Wiley - 12 years ago

I sang the anthem for two years at all basketball games of a large university. IT IS NOT THAT HARD. Singers should remember that it is an ANTHEM. It is not a ballad, a pop or rock song. Get the words down, put it in the right key and sing it like you love your country.

  • JOE CITIZEN SHOW - 12 years ago

Rock Stars specifically should NOT sing our National Anthem because they CAN'T sing it! That's because Rock Musicians ... are not Good musicians ... just the luckiest of all musicians with a smart business manager. Anything musically challenging or with the smallest amount of musical spohistication is beyond most Rock Musicians' concept.
Don't change the National Anthem! Change the performers.
ROCK MUSICIANS cannot cut it! REAL Musicians only need apply.

  • Doug - 12 years ago

To see how it's done RIGHT, watch the Cactus Cuties singing the National Anthem on Youtube.

  • Kassiane P.Lekai - 12 years ago

Only if the sing it, with great respect, exactly as it was written and set to music.
They will be singing our national anthem hopefully with PRIDE and RESPECT for our
    country and for its people.

If they cannot do this, then the national anthem should be announced, all attendees should
stand and together with music read and sing our NATIONAL ANTHEM with pride as it is
    printed across the screen.

After all, this is our national anthem, not a showcase for auditioning for the performing stage
by some very untalented performers. Disgraceful.

  • Roger Kelley - 12 years ago

The blame should be shared equally between the celebrities and the event sponsors that ask them to perform. The event sponsor wants a big name and the celeb is looking into them selves for self gratification and adulation. This is our national anthem and represents all Americans, including everyone that has risked or lost their lives defending the freedoms that we all enjoy. Let's show some respect and have someone that has the talent and ability as well as the patriotism to understand the significance of the anthem they are performing. I do not degrade the celebrities, but I think the ones cited were not sufficiently informed of the significance of the opportunity they were given. It is an honor to be asked to perform our national anthem at a public event, plain and simple. Nothing else.

  • Jeremy - 12 years ago

To Roy who said that celebs should sing the song the way it was written... It was written as a poem with no music, and the tune comes from a popular song sung while drinking in the pubs of Baltimore. People (especially fox readers and viewers) need to think a little and look some stuff up before they start spewing off what they saw Brit Hume, Bill O'Riely or Sean Hannity say.

  • MyBella - 12 years ago

Leave it to those whose voices can truly do it justice: Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson. . I'm hoping Kelly Clarkson will do a good job also.
Putting anyone in the hot seat simply because they're 'celebrities' is a mistake. Just because they can, doesn't mean they should.

  • JUDY LAYNE - 12 years ago

STEVEN TYLER WAS INVITED TO SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.....AND HE DID JUST THAT...STEVEN TYLER STYLE...WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT? I THINK THAT ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE PERSON WHO CHOSE HIM. NOT FAIR TO DUMP THIS ALL ON STEVEN. HE'S A ROCK STAR FOR GOD'S SAKE....AND HE SANG IT LIKE ONE! I'M A HUGE FAN AND I THINKNHE DID A GREAT JOB !!!!

  • LiberalLeaches - 12 years ago

I'll bet that if you list all the screwups who have abused the national anthem, you'd find that all, or practically all of them are liberals. Conservatives are much, more likely to know and respect this piece of heritage. I'f like to see the NFL put some requirements on the performance to help prevent the singer from screwing it up.

  • nicemom43 - 12 years ago

If a celebrity has the voice so sing it..like Carrie Underwood or the former Whitney H. then"YES" but Roseanne Barr , Steve Tyler, Christine A...heck NO! They are an embarrassent to the U.S.!

  • Hawaiiangirl - 12 years ago

Let the Armed Forces provide the singing. I have attended their concerts and they are very professional and good.

  • Paul - 12 years ago

If they insist on celebrities, why not have them just stand and mouth whatever version they want and play Kate Smith over the loudspeakers. No one will know the difference because most couldn't care less.

  • Roy - 12 years ago

Of course celebrities should be able to sing our national anthem, if they can sing our national anthem. They should have to audition and be able to sing it the way it was written not some version of it. If you've ever listened to an Aerosmith recording then you should not have been surpised at Steve Tylers attemp at it.

  • Douglas Patterson - 12 years ago

High school students sing the anthem before our Friday night football games and never muff the words or sing off tune!!!! Forget the celebs; find the nearest high school and you'll find countless students who can do honor to our National Anthem!

  • Steve - 12 years ago

Someone forwarded this to me recently and I echo the writer's sentiment:

“So, with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice
to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a
sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for
your concerts. Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in
kindergarten — straight up, no styling. Sing it with the constant
awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching
you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don’t make them cringe
with your self-centered ego gratification. Sing it as if you are standing
before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver
Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of
you for honoring them and the country they love — not because you want
them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from the
costumes, the makeup and the entourage. Sing “The Star Spangled Banner”
with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about
    America , not you.”

  • Gary - 12 years ago

There is so much local amateur talent near all the venues where these events are held that they should be given the opportunity to sing our national anthem. Young or old makes no difference. They are as good or better than any of these so called stars.

  • T Far - 12 years ago

How about a country singer doing it once. Let's see, last year's Super Bowl in Dallas, TX. and they use Aquilera??!! Are you kidding?! Guarantee you George Strait would have brought the house down...and he's from Texas. The NFL has to quit operating like the only people who watch these things are from LA or New York.

I had to turn Aquilera off it was so embarrassing. And I'm a Packers fan. Its the only time I changed the channel all day.

  • jim kemp - 12 years ago

No Steven Tyler was horrible........they need to stick to controlled inviroment......cause he can't sing at all ..................aweful

  • Chris - 12 years ago

Look....Celebrities....as singers...should be allowed to sing the National Anthem. This is their profession. There are many different styles of singing as we know. Now....I listen to Country (not the new age pop crap) but real country....red dirt country, old country. But my favorite group of all time is Aerosmith. Steven Tyler is one hell of a singer, period.

This was easily his worst National Anthem performance....I am sure he will agree.

But really....to put him on the same level as Rosanne Barr? That is an insult to singers everywhere. Steven Tyler screwed up....he did not sound good. But he sang it.....he sang it to the music......and MOST OF ALL.....he GOT ALL THE WORDS RIGHT.

Now....when you dont get the words right....that is when you should not be allowed to do it again. If it is a voice issue....hey...that comes with it. All singers have bad days. But....if you screw up the music....if you screw up the lyrics....that is when you should be fined...just like many other countries.

  • John - 12 years ago

National Anthem should no longer be allowed at sporting events. Until then no one, celebrity or not. should be allowed to personalize or disrespect it through their performance.

  • Keith - 12 years ago

Why do Celebs think they have to change what has stood for this long. It isn't better if you change the style to show how different you are, it is how well you sing it with passion and a good voice. I thought most celebs wanted us to be treated the same and be equal....everyone but themselves anyway. They continue to show us how different them are and in the process separate themselves successfully.

  • D Ray - 12 years ago

most celebs are left wing liberal anti-americans anyway so of course they are going to butcher it. i think it should be a member of the armed forces

  • Bob R - 12 years ago

Why celebs? There is so much "youth talent" in our nation; why not have some type of local contest to qualify a young vocalist who is among the best of the best?? (Don't go crazy; just find a young singer who can "just do it"!) Once they are qualifed, give them a shot at singing the National Anthem restricted to the standard version. No remakes, please!!

  • Ann - 12 years ago

Even if a celebrity (who knows the words and can sing the right notes) sings, I think they should be joined by everyone in the audience. There are few things more moving than being in a large group of Americans all singing the National Anthem. The words can be put on the tron. Why subject us to someone who could care less about the nation or the anthem ruin it for everyone?

  • bob cooper - 12 years ago

NATIONAL ANTHEM IS MENT TO BE SUNG NOT SCREAMED

  • Sheila Martinka - 12 years ago

Why not have a member of the armed forces sing the National Anthem? It was done very well by the young man on Sunday in Hawaii at the Pro-Bowl. He sang it exactly how it is suppose to be sung. With dignity, honor, and true patriotism! I think most of the celebs (as well as some Americans (liberals) ) do not have a clue what our military gives up so that these people can enjoy the freedom and liberties that they enjoy. Thanks Fox News for the great work you do to inform all of us with the facts!

  • James - 12 years ago

Yes, but only if they sing it as it was written, the Marine Corps Band version.

  • JOE DRAGOVIC - 12 years ago

I AM A SEASONED CITIZEN AND I CAN REMMBER WHEN THE LATE KATE SMITH SANG THE ANTHEM. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY RECORDINGS STILL IN EXISTANCE OF HER PERFORMANCES? BUT IF THERE ARE ANY PERSONS WHO MAY BE CONCERDERED FOR SINGING THE ANTNEM AT A MAJOR EVENT SHOULD LISTEN TO HER RENDITION OF THE ANTHEM. THE WAY SHE PERFORMED THE ANTHEM IS THE PROPER WAY IT SHOULD BE SUNG AND THE ONLY WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE!!!!! THE ANTHEM SHOULD BE SUNG WITH RESPECT AND HONOR IT DESERVES!!!!!! ENOUGH SAID

  • John - 12 years ago

Personally, I'm waiting for the time when one of the networks gets the brilliant idea to let a member of our Armed Forces sing it. they will sing it flawlessly and the country will rejoice and say collectively, "What a beautiful National Anthem, that's the way they should all be done" and then from that moment forward all events will be done like that. And we will take pride in our country and give thanks for what God has given us.

  • Leslie M. Bowman - 12 years ago

I think celebrities should be able to sing the national anthem, but they need to do it in a respectful manner, in keeping with the traditional way of singing the song, and if they forget the words (or sing the wrong words), they should not get paid for the performance.

  • waller - 12 years ago

No,no,n0 with one exception, Whitney Houston. Her singing of our National Anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl was electrifying, and puts to shame all of the no-talent yellers since then!

  • Mike - 12 years ago

Celebrities should be allowed to sing the National Anthem not just because they are celebrities but because they will do a proper and respectful job. Kristin Chenoweth did a great job at the Niners game as opposed to the horrible job that Steven Tyler did earlier in the day.

  • Army Retiree - 12 years ago

There is only ONE VERSION. Sing it to the tempo and style. There is NO ROOM to personalize it.

  • T - 12 years ago

Too broad to say that celebrities shouldn't sing it. Some do an excellent job and others can't. I think they need to be screened and if they don't know the words then .....DENIED.

Sorry really disagree the words are not that hard to remember- If you can sing than the notes then shouldn't be that hard. I am not a singer who's job it is to remember lyrics and I can get them right every time.

  • jed - 12 years ago

no,they should be proud to sing it without trying to make it a personal top ten hit.

  • John Darr - 12 years ago

I think it should go back to having the audience sing it. That may be a small way of encouraging our unity as AMERICANS which seems to be waning over the past decades. Of course they will not do that because the promoters make money out of having a celebrity do it because it draws people to watch.

  • Pam - 12 years ago

I voted "no" because so many celebs think they have to alter the national anthem to fit their personal style of singing. However, I can think of a few celebs who would be able to sing it with the respect and reverence required. Josh Groban comes to mind.....

  • joebola - 12 years ago

Sure, but only if the celeb is Carrie Underwood

  • johnna - 12 years ago

It's like everything else these days ... when they opt for a celebrity to sing at any event, it's always for ratings ... 9 times out of ten the celeb is going to sing it "their way" and the sponsoring organization is hoping for a large viewership to tuen in to hear "how badly the singer will mess up." It's pure ratings, plain and simple. If iut weren't they would get a Marine Corp or Army to do it (much better in my opinion) but we live in an age when ratings and money drive the car

  • Dick - 12 years ago

Suggest you consider a barbershop chorus or championship quartet. It would be a capella and sound great and follow the lyrics and the melody as well as be short and sweet!! Check out Accoustix on youtube.com or, better yet, "The American-Canadian National Anthem" by the AIC chorus. You ain't gonna believe the latter!!!

  • Bob - 12 years ago

I am so tired of listening to celebrities murdering the natioanl anthem. It seems each one has to out do the other with their absurd renditions. I am cringing at what will be sung at the Super Bowl.

  • Dona - 12 years ago

The celebrities have no business singing the song if they don't follow the original version. It offends me to hear them butcher it. We have much better talent in this country that would be glad to sing it the correct way. I say fire the idiots that pick these people. I am a Hoosier and I am also offended that we chose "MaDonna" for the Super Bowl. Is that all we have to pick from - a worn out old lady that likes to show her aversion to Christianity.

  • John Spellman - 12 years ago

Almost 100% of celebrities are ultra liberal USA despisers. They can only talk if given a script and no matter how many times they read OUR National Anthem they cannot resist the temptation to debauch it.

  • Chuck Sparks - 12 years ago

The next time one these "incidents" happen I suggest the audience show their disapproval by sitting down in silence. That speaks louder than words.

  • mooseinfmp - 12 years ago

No more celebrity butchery of the national anthem PLEASE!

These jackholes get paid $$$ to stand up there and insult us with their carelessness, stupidity and outright drug-addled depravity.

Let the fine men and women of our armed forces bands and chorus groups show us their passion for this country, and then pay each of them the same fee that these celebrity morons demand.

  • David - 12 years ago

If we didn't let celebs sing it, we would have missed out on Whitney Houston's rendition at Super Bowl XXV in 1991. It is still one of the most moving versions I have ever heard. But let's use some judgement. Who couldn't forsee that Rosanne or Carl Lewis' versions would be terrible. They are not even singers!

  • Lynn - 12 years ago

No celebs unless they've proven they truly love our country. The gentleman (member of the army?) who sang before the Pro Bowl did an outstanding job!

  • Bobbie - 12 years ago

I especially like some of your ideas to "let the military do it". Now THAT would be impressive!

  • Danny Lewis - 12 years ago

I agree with Glenn Beck IRT Steve Tyler. He is a rock singer with a voice that has made him millions. Mr. Tyler is also an American, and I respect that. I also agree with Pam a felwo commentor, Fox News is becomming like all the other media. Why strive to turn Americans against each other. GBTV is about the only televised unabusive and truth on the market.

  • Jeff - 12 years ago

Steven Tyler and some of the others listed are professional singers. I think everyone knew how Steven Tyler sounds. I think the organizers need to better scrutinize their performers. Roseanne and Zooey Deschanel are not a professional singers and may not be the best choices. I've seen young kids do an awesome job and others fall flat. It's ultimately up to the organizer to choose the best possible candidate and if they make a mistake and forget the words then what are you going to do.

  • Robert Bray - 12 years ago

What kind of question is this? It has no answer
Are all 'celebrities' incapable of singing the National Anthem? Of course not
I think maybe the question that needs to be asked is the same one that should have been asked by the network executives that approved Tyler to sing which is what can we expect to hear from Tyler when he sings? It could be that the network wanted to have a controversy for ratings but that is more disrespectful to the National Anthem that Tylers singing.
What a truly stupid question to ask.

  • elaine - 12 years ago

I agree with the marching band. I also like it like in the "old" days, let the audience sing it; at least maybe they'll learn the words and pay attention to the meaning of the lyrics.
I also like the idea of the military doing it. The 82nd chorus is excellent, along with the other military choruses from different branches. T
    h
    ey practice what they sing.

  • Stevo - 12 years ago

Let the great performers of our great military take care of the national anthem!!!!

  • Abraham Rodriguez - 12 years ago

I think they should leave the singing of the National Anthem to those of us who actually have the respect to LEARN the words to the song..

787-556-6426 I will be more than happy to sing it.

    Abraham Rodriguez
    SSG, USA

  • G T McDaniel - 12 years ago

I'm a WW2 United States Marine, I get hot under the collar when I hear anyone butcher our National Anthem! Semper Fi

  • Geoff - 12 years ago

The examples of this (celebrity performances of the National Anthem) show that there is a narcissism that invevitably comes in to play instead of devotion and respect in the delivery.

  • Beth - 12 years ago

Steven Tyler, et. al. is as much an American as any of us and as we strive to appreciate the diversity in our country, so we should applaud any of us willing to stand in front of our millions to belt out the National Anthem loud and proud.

  • Dianne Miller - 12 years ago

I don't mind celebrities singing the National Anthem, as long as they follow the original arrangement. It's a beautiful song, and I'm tired of celebrities trying to show that "their way" is better...it usually isn't. If it's not a song normally in their repertoire, most people can't sing it...but celebrities have too much conceit to admit that.

  • Pam - 12 years ago

I am saddened that FOX NEWS, usually an unbiased news organization, would use a headline and a subject like this to divide us. Haven't we had enough of pitting Americans against one another? I actually appreciated seeing Steven Tyler at the bowl game as I find him (albeit highly unusual) a very good mentor on AI. When I saw him standing to sing our country's song, I felt that he was showing his patriotism! And don't we have an awesome anthem that so many performers of different musical genres have delivered a version all their own? Let's thank the sports organizations for continuing to honor our country by beginning their contests with the anthem and let's say hooray for any or all that will perform this song in all their glory! It truly is a great country!!!

  • Karen - 12 years ago

They should audition first. Before some real patriots. Why do they change this sacred song? Arent they proud Americans?

  • Allan - 12 years ago

Absolutly NO. It's not something to be screeched and improvised and it certainly isn't a piano jazz bar song. It is totally disrespectfull. Would you want the psalms chanted to the Yellow Submarine? ...and it's not the Rocky Horror Show!

  • Tom - 12 years ago

Who is responsible for picking those who will sing the anthem? Whoever is in charge of that is the one that needs to be replaced first. Then make sure you pick people who can sing and will sing it correctly without trying to "entertain" anyone. I'd rather not even have the anthem sung than to hear these Hollywood no-talent idiots butcher it.

  • Al - 12 years ago

After the performance that a significant (majority) number of celebrities (those named are a VERY good example...) who have ATTEMPTED to sing the National Anthem have given, I'd say we have a very clear answer to that question. That song is about American bravery and patriotism... pride in our nation and our people.

The National Anthem is something that should be respected... and the performance that many celebrities give (i.e., Rosanne Barr... I can imagine I'm not the only one who remembers that disgusting fallacy...) when faced with it is very disrespectful.

As someone said previously... they have to be seen before an event organizer before they do it in public, and if they can't do it in a fashion that shows proper respect to the song, then they don't belong singing it at the event.

    End of sentence.

  • Dick - 12 years ago

Leave it to the Pros Pleae,

  • Ken - 12 years ago

Get a college marching band. Much better than "Hollywoodites" who rarely know the words much less the meaning.:)

  • John - 12 years ago

The National Anthem is not a piece of music to be changed or sung like a rock song. It is a solomn song that shows that even in a desperate moment there is triumph. Leave it to someone who feels that way and I agree with the other two comments keep the celebs out of it.

  • Kevin Kline - 12 years ago

Let them sing. Most of them know the words to the tune and dont sing it any worse then the fans who are attempting to sing it in the stands. It comes down to individual freedom and if you do not like how one sings it......dont ask.

  • Bobbie - 12 years ago

They disrespect it with their delivery. It's all about THEM.

  • Matt Khan - 12 years ago

As a first generation, proud American, I cringe every time a "celebrity" comes up to the mike to sing our national anthem. Inevitably, it degenerates into it being all about them, rather than the song. Wish they would sing it like it is supposed to be sung - without all the nuances, self-promotion, etc.. I truly believe that it shows disrespect to the anthem is so many different ways.

  • Bill - 12 years ago

The only way someone should be allowed to sing the National Anthem at a event is to sing it before to the event orginizer. and let them decide if the persons is worthy. Beter yet let Richard Vasquez sing National Anthem
