Like anything that affects your brain, such as alcohol or pain killers, salvia is only dangerous when used when one has to focus on their immediate responsibilities. It has never been linked to any side effects of any sort, and the case of the child who committed suicide was a disturbed kid on various drugs besides salvia, including illegal ones.
Yes, Salvia is a potent hallucinogen that lasts 5 minutes, and anything can go wrong in 5 minutes no matter what you do. Yes, there is such a thing as very cheap salvia, although realize that the cheaper it is, the less it works. For $10 an ounce you'll be lucky to get more of an effect than a few cigarettes.
Absinthe can cause many side effects and is FAR more long-lasting than salvia. It inherently has the potential for harm when abused. But salvia simply has not been proven to actually cause anything of negative medical or psychological consequence.
Personally, I have smoked salvia on a very regular basis for over 2 years and I find it to be a very interesting spiritual experience. The only time it's unpleasant is when using potencies that are too strong. I would not recommend it to anyone under 18 for any purpose because they are simply not good decision-makers and may use it while driving or other such inappropriate times.
I think that it was a bad idea to put it on the news because now the children and teenagers that did not know about it do. It should not be sold and should be illegal and now the sellers will just profit more from the fact that it showed up on the news so the rest of the world that did not know about it do.
Ridilin seems to be much more destructive than this drug.
Shrooms...
Like the previous poster, I absolutely agree. I have used Salvia on several occasions. I'm a 19 year old student, and have ordered from website before.
Salvia is unlike any other drug, and should be treated as such. It has a reverse tolerance, and the herb itself is counter-addictive. It has been successfully used to treat depression, and cocaine abuse, as well as create a sense of enlightenment in users (including myself.) Salvia is NOT a recreational drug, and should not be used as such as it will result in an unpleasant experience, which will --by experience-- will result in discouraged future use by the user.
If more legislation is to pass on Salvia, years and years of medical research will have been in vain simply because of fear mongering, ignorant politicians and reporters. "The next legal high" is used by reporters and journalists alike, as well as irresponsible retailers, although the plant and its active ingredient Salvinorin-A unlike any substance in the world. I do believe it can and is used responsibly by those who wish to explore their minds, and it should be regulated and be sold to those only under 18, perhaps 21.
The experience is not a "high," rather an experience. One looses all sense of conscious reality for a short time (3-10 minutes) after use, which is a short period of time. Although the user may not be able to speak or interact with their environment consciously, the brain interprets objects differently, which is a gateway to your inner self (also a way for the indigenous people of Oaxaca, Mexico to speak with gods and enter into the spirit world. Learning from this unique plant is something we should all experience. It has changed many many people for the better, either mentally, or physically. Do your own research before placing judgment on its users, instead of being an ignorant human being.
Lenni, by your logic, the news should never talk about anything bad because then people will know about it, therefore more people will do bad things.
Even though I am pro-salvia, I support intelligent, balanced discussion of the actual issue. Fox News has presented us a completely one-sided report with some exaggerations and inaccurate conclusions that are forced upon the facts, which are themselves lacking or presented in a misleading way.
Please understand that you are against something that may prove very beneficial to humanity, but if you're not willing to do actual research to find that out for yourself before making your biased judgment, than I have no reason to believe you'll listen to me either.
Prove to me that salvia has ONE SINGLE side effect and I may listen. Hallucinations are not inherently harmful in an of themselves anymore than dreaming in your sleep is harmful.
Salvia Pros:
Used to treat cocane and other substance abuse
Used to treat depression
Increased insight
Increased mood
Increased Connection with Universe or Nature
Increased self-confidence
Improved concentration
Feelings of Calmness
No side effects
Past memories, such as revisiting places from childhood memory
Salvia Cons:
Increased sweating
Uncontrollable laughter (pro or con?)
Salvinorin-A cannot and has not been synthetically produced in a laboratory.
"Bad trip" (results in discouraged use)
Professor Bryan L. Roth, director of the National Institute on Mental Health’s Psychoactive Drug Screening Program, has said
“ We think that drugs derived from the active ingredient could be useful for a range of diseases: Alzheimer’s, depression, schizophrenia, chronic pain and even AIDS or HIV.”
Clinical pharmacologist John Mendelsohn has also said
“There may be some derivatives that could be made that would actually be active against cancer and HIV […] At the present time, there are a lot of therapeutic targets that have many people excited.”
Alcohol is responsible for 100,000 highway accidents every year.
People die from liver scerosis a very preventable disease.
Not to mention the alcohol poisonings during sprink break and new years.
My point being, alcohol is legal and very harmful and intoxicating.
Salvia on the other hand does not damage your body and I say this from experience, no one will try and drive under the influence of this drug. It should remain legal and be sold to adults.
There have been no deaths caused by Salvia. The one boy who committed suicide simply HAPPENED to try Salvia. Outlawing a herb simply because it goes against conservative sensibilities is not the role of government or law enforcement. People are not forced to use Salvia - it is a choice we all will make. Legal or illegal, people will continue to use it. You're simply creating a criminal for a victimless "offense."
Stop campaigning off of peoples emotions and research what you're fighting against.
"no one will try and drive under the influence of this drug."
John, you can't really drive under the influence of this drug anyways, because it severely impairs your motor functions, even if you managed to get into your car, turning the ignition would be near impossible. If you smoke it while behind the wheel on the road... it would be completely ridiculous, and anyone with even a shred of common sense would avoid this at all costs.
