I think that if people want to play cards in the privacy of their own homes it should be allowed. There is nothing wrong with having a few friends over and playing innocent games, especially if done in a private setting. It is probably safer for these people to be in their own homes with friends instead of out on the streets, where the chances are increased for getting mugged, shot, or something else related to crime exists.
What? Playing card games in your own house is illegal? I had a poker tournament this weekend at my house with 6 of my friends. I'm glad we weren't arrested. That is a really ridiculus law.
This world has changed for the worse. Violence is everywhere. Fix all that and THEN debate the pros and cons of gambling of ANY kind. Gambling addicted people WILL gamble somewhere, some way. I have no interest in it myself and would choose not to waste my money that way but if I chose to have a small friendly game in my home, that should be my business. I think 200 year old laws need to be revewed and some need changing. Wonder how many other laws that old are in effect, and how many are actually enforced. It might be very interesting to check that out. The state doesn't seem to have a problem with gambling on the the lottery, where poor people spend way more than they can afford to on gambling and hoping for a miracle. The only problems they seem to have are when they don't get a cut. That could be fixed too.
South Carolina, like all other states, are concerned about laws when it feels they won't get money from it. Give South Carolina some revenue from gambling and card games and legislators will suddenly find a reason why it should be allowed. Same ole' story of capitalism!
