While I think you're son wouldn't have the problem getting home, but I'm just so concerned about the potential problems that he might have incurred with someone hurting him. I mourn for my kids who can't be free-range kids because of all of the horrible things we hear about. Because of the negative news I don't read newspapers except listen to NPR and NYTimes for anything worthwhile. I grew up running off all day and playing in hills behind our house and playing in the streets in summer until the street lights came on, but that was a different time. There are just too many creepy people crusing around our neighborhood to allow this. My kids (10 & 12) would know how to get home but I would make sure they had a phone in the beginning to make sure they weren't afraid if they ran into a problem. My city only has 30,000 and the bus system isn't something I'd saddle them with at this point. They're too vulnerable and irreplaceable. Nope, I'm note in agreement with sending them out that naked! They'll learn eventually.
