Well, i'm a junior in Nc and i attend South Granville High School and I'm in a class or course called JROTC and we do like TONSSS of community service. Just today i was stirring stew (that was very good) for the need, and trust me is was not easy. But as i was saying we have done tons of community service for every one we do we get a credit and they are kept in our cadet records, we also get a nice new ribbon for our uniform.

Unfortunately scholarships are all chance, I am very involved in and out of school with community service, have been in the National Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students, along with other honors. Yet the only scholarships that I have received have been through the actual colleges I have applied to. All you can do is keep trying for any scholarship that applies to you in any way.

Nope. I don't have any volunteer experience on any of my scholarship applications or my college applications. However, I have a very good reason for this. I live in a "sheltered" Christian community. Because of this, I can't just go into town whenever I want to just so that I can get some volunteer experience under my belt. I don't really have the time for it with my busy school schedule and trying to get all of my applications in on time. The way I see it is that I get some volunteering time in at some other time. Not during my senior year.

Hi everyone! Well I most definately recommend that you begin doing community service during you freshman year of high school. This way, you have no rush, and can accumulate many hours by the time you are a senior. Also, you will be able to focus on other priorities during your senior year, such as college, university, and scholarship applications. I am currently a senior, and over three years have already accumulated more than 1,000 hours. I could have gotten more during this long period of time, but I wanted to take things slow since I knew I would have three years to accumulate as many hours as I could, without having this take up lots of time. 1,000+ hours is still plenty, and scholarships can be earned just by having 200-300 hours. However, if you have 200 hours and I have 1,000+, who do you think they would choose??? :)

Well lets see...I put yes on the "Do you volunteer poll." I would just like to say that I have volunteered many places in my life and most of them don't count for college applications because they were before high school, but right now I am volunteering at the local theater...they give out a scholarship every for a thousand dollars each year...and I'm only a sophmore...so I'll have to work there for 2 more years if I even want a chance to get it. Its fun and worth it, and I have to get a job this summer too. I know for sure that I'm going to need some sort of financial aid..maybe this is the place to find it.

Its important to begin volunteer work early! Start early that way you can chose what you want to do and have more option. Whereas if you wait too later if have to do anything that comes along Keshia---freshman in college

I would like to find more scholarships for Service, because I have volunteered at a lot of placesw and done different things, things from Tutoring to Girl Scout Projects, and have over 1200 hours in.

For those of you out there who are really trying to get some financial aid, I would recommend trying your best to apply to as many as you can. In fact, statistically, if you apply to ten scholarships, then you will, or are more likely to get one of them. Therefore, do not lose hope. I am sure some scholarship money will roll in. I am not saying all this because I have received a lot of financial aid. However, I have received only one. Yet, applying to almost thirty big scholarships have given me a lot of experience. Also, be true to yourself. If you know you may not receive the scholarship because you have little need, then don't expect to get it.

I wish I had some volunteer work, but there is virtually no volunteer work in my community.

I am currently an undergraduate music major. There are hardly any scholarships for music majors, and we don't seem to have the same qualifications for scholarships as other students. We spend countless hours practicing, rehearsing, etc. while other students may have the opportunity to volunteer. Personally, I am working my way through school & don't expect a big pay-out like medical or business students will receive after the same amount of education. Let me know if you find something for people who EXCEL in the arts.

Having volunteer experience has been a huge benefit to me when applying for scholarships! When I started college, I was awarded $3500 in scholarships!

I would love to do more community service but living in Michigan has strained me from volunteering more. Luckily I am moving soon and volunteer work will be more accessable.

Volunteering is one of the most important aspects of life. Its always good for people to have that initiative of giving to those that have not or have less. Students need financial assistance just as children need parental care. If i had i would be very happy top help those that have not.

For everyone who says they don't have anywhere to volunteer, I have one question: Are there no hospitals, animal shelters, elementary school, nursing homes, libraries or churches in your community. Everyone has somewhere to volunteer, they just don't know where to look. Although I am not quite sure that it gets you as much money as extracurricular activities at school, it is still better for the soul than Latin club.

If you believe you have no where to volunteer, then come up with your own activity. Find something that you really care about and raise money to support it. I was diagnosed with Lupus when I was seven and have created my own fundraisers in order to raise money for the Lupus Foundation and the camp that I have gone to since I was diagnosed, Camp JRA, a camp for kids with rheumatic diseases. There's plenty of things to raise money for, Arthritis, Cancer, Asthma, Multiple Sclerosis, hunger, homelessness, anything you can think of.

I don't think it is always fair to ask you to do community service. I am a Senior Nursing Major and it is the most challenging thing I have ever done. I do not have time to perform community service because I have to study all of the time. There is NO free time in Nursing school! I have to work in the summer to help pay for college in the fall because I don't get pell grants or the Tennessee Lottery Scholarship (they only pay for a limited amount of hours except for certain people). I do apply for scholarships, but so is everyone else and I haven't been awarded any yet. There are some majors that do have a limited amount of free time and students can do community service. That's great if you can, I think you should. The extent of my community service is helping in my church. Does it get any better than that?

Hmmm... Who does not have this? You can't get a good job/colage with out it! Come on! >.<

Hey all! If you happen to live in Wake County, NC, and are looking for some ways to volunteer, consider signing up for Communities In Action with ME³ - they will guide you through the volunteer process and help you find places to volunteer that match your interests, skills, and schedule.
