Should pharmaceutical companies enjoy greater legal freedoms to provide prescription drug information directly to the public?

Pharmaceutical companies have compelling financial and monopolistic ambitions. When profit is the solitary goal, half truths will be sold as singular truths and as we have seen, lies have been told and aggressively sold; and when caught, defended tooth and nail. How can we trust companies with direct access to potential consumers when so much is at stake for us and apparently for the companies.
