At UCLA only those players whose teams have won a national championship have had their numbers retired.

UCLA has specific standards in order to retire a number. And the standards are very high. UNC says you must be named player of the year. UCLA uses that measurement as well and/or 3-time consensus All-American. Unfortunately MacLean doesn't make the cut. Why should UCLA lower its standards? Should UCLA start putting up Pac8 and Pac10 banners in Pauley? Same idea - the answer is no. Besides, he wouldn't be UCLA's leading scorer if he only was allowed to play 3 years varsity like Alcindor/Jabbar. Further, McClean wasn't exactly a good sportsman while he was playing for UCLA. Plenty of cheap shots, etc.
