Politics is also about the fabric of the individual else the sum of the parts - society - has no moral, healthy core. A society is comprised of individuals. If Spitzer treats his family like this, what does "The State of New York" truly mean to him other than a phrase? He doesn't get it, if he ever did. He should be punished for letting us all down and resign.

If he's guilty and he knows it, and it appears that he is and does, then yes. This is not the year to be burdening one's allies with scandal. And it would demonstrate to the Republicans and the American people that lawbreaking has consequences, and that responsible persons acknowledge their errors and face the consequences. This is a concept that Republicans like Vitter, Craig, and shotgun-wielding Dick Cheney don't seem to grasp.

He should NOT resign. What we should have learned from the Clinton/Lewinsky affair was that one's personal peccadilloes have no bearing on how one performs his job. I recall that many wanted Clinton to resign. It's a good thing he didn't, as he went on to preside over the largest economic boom in our nation's history, with a half a trillion dollar surplus. Spitzer is the Governor, not the pope. Who cares if he fucks around as long as he does he job well? Not me! I'd rather have a great governor with a zipper problem (and I do -- San Francisco's Gavin Newsom) than a mediocre governor without one. I am so very tired of the parochial grousing of holier-than-thou crowd, the ones who end up arrested in the men's room.

The simple fact is he knowingly committed a crime. (One that he prosecuted others for) Duh of course he should resign.

"Yes," simply because he prosecuted a prostitution ring in NY and got up on a high moral horse. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Well, yes, he should also resign because if he's incapable of governing himself he's incapable of governing others. Why IS it that otherwise intelligent men seem to have such trouble keeping their little soldiers inside their tighty whiteys?

What IS it with you Americans and sex? So, two consenting adults had sex. No violence, no rape. And as for "treating his family this way" . . . that's their business and no-one else's, just as much an abortion is a woman's business alone. Yeah, he's got a problem with hypocrisy, prosecuting a prostitution ring when he uses prostitutes himself -- but what's that hypocrisy compared to, say, taking campaign money from a chemical factory dumping carcinogens into the water table. Get a grip. There are minor sins and major sins, small crimes and big crimes. And everyone knows that the Wall Street scumbags that Spitzer is going after have committed far greater crimes that his minor bit of canoodling. So he should leave, and BIG criminals stay fat and cosy and comfortable? Can you say, "baby with the bathwater", or "self-defeating strategy?" (Please note that Senator Vitter, despite using prostitutes, wearing diapers, and participating in feces-play, did not resign.) Grow up!

cannot agree with you more hairhead. let's not live our less than perfect sex lives through others. i could have cared less about bill/monica. he was a great president. we run around with our moral panties in a wad and the people who pushed bill/monica episode were manipulating us into bush. they do not care about bill/monica, but they know how we can be twisted so they can shaft us. we are still saying shame shame over sex and they have robbed us blind. we are stupid!!!!!!

Don't mean to simply repeat what has already been said, but Spitzer's soliciting sex should not require that he resign as Gov. Heck, Congress people don't have to resign for doing it. If we didn't allow scummy pols to hold office, where would we be? About 75% of our political "leaders" would fall away.

You guys who dont think he should resign are so morally corrupt. To have a Leading Government Official GUILTY OF A CRIME - on top of the moral superiority that he chose to build his career on - means HE HAS TO GO. Poor Tim - even Clinton will tell you he was a meaningless leader because of his immoral behavior and his sexual harassment. Uninformed Hairhead - Spitzer has been morally corrupt for years and his most recent LAW BREAKING charades as well as his attempt to frame his opposition leader (he has lied about this by telling everyone he would comply with the special prosecutors which he is stonewalling). He admits guilt here. He broke the law and its not about SEX its about THE RULE OF LAW. manemow - you are worse than hairhead... seriously you support sexually harassment... nice... forcing sex on employees is a great society you are looking to live in. Bill Clintons problem was PAULA JONES SEXUALLY HARASMENT not his affair. His affair just outlined his moral character. Of lack thereof... THIS MAN BROKE THE LAW. I know you lefties don't care about moral fiber and will make excuses for your elected representatives. When a person takes a moral stand and makes that the bedrock of his career and leads you to believe that he will be moral leader then gets caught in an immoral act - he should resign. If Spitzer was a playboy and was clear about his moral deficiencies character then he has a case that his breaking the law is ok. You asked for it - you got it. do the crime - pay the price - no exceptions.

And in case any of you are unclear regarding my vote, let me be perfectly perspicuous... FUCK NO! Elliot Spitzer should resign the day John McCain, David Vitter, Larry Craig, and all the other IOKIYAR hypocrites resign. Until then, FUCK NO!

Mar 10, 2008 9:36pm ET

lr, So you gonna confess all your naughty deeds to us morally deficient DFHs? 'Cause if you ain't, YOU, my friend, are the hypocrite. Judge not, that is, unless you want to be judged. (And the DFHs stooped down and wrote in the sand, as if they hadn't heard lr...)

Fred oh Fred- when and if i run for Public office promising to bring new ethical behavior - and if my career was spent prosecuting offenders - then i would be as you say a hypocrite. BUT if i tell you that i am morally superior then i would expect to be judged. YES - JUDGE ME IF I AM GOVERNOR. i dont get your point about Elliot - he should not be held accountable? You don't doubt he broke the law do you? This is what he said - ADMITTING WRONG DOING - ADMITTING HE PROMISED (does a promise mean anything anymore?) **QUOTE** "Today, I want to briefly address a private matter. I have acted in a way that violated the obligations to my family and that violates my -- or any -- sense of right and wrong. I apologize first, and most importantly, to my family. I apologize to the public, whom I promised better." **UNQUOTE** In a interview two years ago, Spitzer, then-attorney general, told ABC News he had some advice for people who break the law. "Never talk when you can nod, and never nod when you can wink, and never write an e-mail because it's death. You're giving prosecutors all the evidence we need," he said. Lastly - the man has an approval rating of 35% as of 2/27 (Survey USA) not much better than our President 35% (LAT TIMES 2/25). Have you heard of addition by subtraction??? When he is gone NYS will be a better place...

I am disapointed by Spitzer, as others have pointed out, *not* for the sex, but the hypocrisy. He has put other people in jail and ended their careers for doing this. He can not expect a different standard for himself. As to Senators David Vitter, Larry Craig and other Republicans who follow the "It's OK If You're A Republican" rule, rather than the rule of law and common standards of integrity and decency... well the hypocrisy and immorality of it inflames me too. But the question becomes, do we let the lowest performing, basest, most dishonest hypocritical scumbags set the bar for what is appropriate in these kinds of situations? Why? As a Democrat, I am disappointed in Spitzer, but at least he still has the integrity to step up, accept responsibility and withdraw from his position of trust with whatever dignity he can still muster. He can *take* responsibility. That sets a higher standard than most of the Republican politicians involved in this kind of sordid behavior (and gosh, there sure seems to be a *lot* of them) seem to be able to meet. And I think the standard *should* be a hell of a lot higher than what the Republicans have demonstrated over and over again, so yes... Spitzer should resign. And he will. So should Vitter and Craig. And they won't. Talk about making a clear distinction in standards between the parties...

Time - thats an amazing comeback. Nice language. I guess you and Bill are in the same camp. do you sexually harrass women too? Seems your guy has a track record of immoral behavior when it comes to women - #1 - 12 year affair with Gennifer Flowers - #2 - Sexually Harassing Paula Jones - #3 - Monica Lewinsky affair #4 Juanita Brodrick Sexually Harassing #5 - Kathleen Willey - Sexual Harassing and/or intimidation #6 - Dolly Kyle Browning - affair #7 Sally Purdue Affair - #8 - Christy Zercher - Sexual Harrassing *** and you defend this record?

Amid all the fainting and the fetching of smelling salts over the shocking (SHOCKING!!!) sex story, some questions are being overlooked. Why are the feds prosecuting a governor for breaking the white slavery law of 1910? How did the feds first learn of Spitzer's peccadillos? Who leaked his name to the press? (Didn't happen to Vitter; he outed himself.) And finally, who trusts Bush's justice system anymore?

spitzer should resign -- but only the day after bush and cheney both hand in their resignations. after all, his are the relatively routine sins of enormous hypocrisy and repeated adultery. bush and cheney on the other hand are guilty of being mass murderers, war criminals and serial liars. until both of them voluntarily step down i see no reason for spitzer, however arrogant, hypocritical and idiotic his behavior to do so. if the people of new york state, through their elected representatives, want to remove him from office, or if he runs for another term and the people don't reelect him, that is another story.

Spitzer has been corupt since taking office. With the troopergate scandle. Appointing a republican senator to head a commision, so that the democrates could more easly take control of the Senate majority. And what about his attempt to give driver Lic to illegal's. That in itself should have been viewed as A federal crime. harboring! What msg does this send, to our children and people of this state, if he is left to continue as Gov? As for people that want to compare this to Bill Clinton. Well Clinton may have been a cheater, but that NOT breaking the Law... Patronizing a prostitute is!

What happened to the DC Madam list? We did not even get to see the list of all those who were involved. Was anyone impeached or forced to resign? So why should Spitzer?

Other than his hypocrisy, what business is it of the public? This is a personal matter, and to the extent it is a "crime" it is victimless. Should we force any government official who ever breaks the law to step down? We won't have any government officials left, if that's the case. This is between Spitzer and his wife.
