Have you ever played a character of the opposite gender in an online game?

Yes, almost all of the time.

Yes, but less than 50 percent of the time.

No, I've never played a character of the opposite gender online.

No, because I think even pretending to play a character of the opposite gender online is wrong.

I've never played an online game.

Yes, guys playing female avatars will say they do it to watch the fem toon, but while true, that's maybe only part of the answer. We also like the social interaction change. And some of us are androgynously gendered with both strong male and female attributes and just want some time to be something we can't be in real life. No, it's not a gay thing. I doubt most guys playing female avatars do it just to get embraces from the male avatars, though offers for that do happen, and I suppose some might.
In some games, some avatar classes only come in one gender, so if the guy playing in a game I know wants to be a Venomancer, the avatar will be female. Or a girl playing a Barbarian, will have a male avatar.
The other answer to this question is the uninformative reply: "It's complicated."
