Rules of engagement are almost total BS. We had them in Vietnam. Of course the VC and NVA did not. Now the men and women facing fanatics in Afghanistan and Iraq are saddled with more of the same. These rules result in more casualties for us and that sucks. War is the cessation of fairness and sanity. War is not fair or humane. I don't advocate slaughter or "Kill 'em all and let God sort them out." I do however feel that ROEs cause second guessing and that gets Americans dead real fast. American fighting men and women know the difference between right and wrong. Our people have a strong moral code (there will always be exceptions with or without ROEs.) The bad guys have no rules to follow. Don't the brass hats and bean counters trust our warriors enough to allow them to make the decisions in the field without some JAG lawyer who's never been at the sharp end looking over the warrior's shoulder. Put a few senators, representatives, and lawyers outside the wire and see how quickly the ROEs go bye bye.
