My guess is that he's not possessed, but that he learned something while he was being bombarded with the radiation, when he was hiaving his visions. (If they were, in fact, visions, as opposed to "normal" flash sideways.) I think he realized that in order to save Penny and his child, he had to cooperate with Widmore.

Loved the episode but the serene look on Desmonds's face after his experience (in a box with a chair that reminded me of the cabin) makes me wonder if he does realize why he is there or is he now possessed like Sayid who he didn't seem to mind following. I kind of expected to also see Jack at the stadium and was worried for a moment or two when he walked back to the limo.
