Why did Jacob stop Richard from killing him but refused to fight Ben?

He intended Ben to kill him (even though he hoped he wouldn't). It's not that he recognized it was his time -that would imply passivity. Instead, it was according to his plan all along, although I have no idea yet what that plan is. It's like a long con. Remember, Jacob says you can't come to his 'statue' if you're not invited. That would mean that he invited MIB & Ben. He knows MIB wants to kill him (MIB has been very blunt about this for over a century), and he knows that Ben is the loophole, or one of them. What else did he think would happen? Ben's daughter is dead; Jacob has never spoken to Ben yet seems to speak quite easily to "John Locke";Ben is primed to be manipulated. Jacob would be aware of all these things--they are obvious to us in retrospect, knowing what we know. Therefore, this is all according to Jacob's plan--whatever that plan is!

I think he needed Richard to fill the advisory role and his work was just what he needed to get the right group of castaways to the island. He may have even wanted Ben to kill him to set in motion a chain of events that would prove his theories right.

I think he knew it was his time, it seems he has a long drawn out plan with the candidates and all; however, at the same time, he was hoping Ben wouldn't have it in his heart to kill him.
