Are Republicans right to call for suspending environmental protection laws in the name of job growth?

If someone told you to jump off a cliff because it will create jobs and help the enviornment would you do it?
    PLEASE?
As others have said, this law does nothing but chase refiners over seas where they have NO 'Green Laws', then we pay for forign oil/gas at huge markups and that HURTS our economy! Pull your head out!
Yes we should suspend AB32. Indefinately (If you care about the economy and/or the enviornment!)

Wake up America! Global warming is a joke, Once the refineries go away where are you women going to get your lipstick. Every thing we use in our daily life's is made from oil and I would like to know what kind of environmental laws they have in China and India. It certainly isn't like the EPA, AQMD, laws in California Refineries face 24/7 365 days a year. This AB32 would only drive more companies to leave California close more Refineries, put more people out of work and IF BEING DEPENDENT ON FOREIGN OIL IS BAD, WAIT TILL YOU ARE DEPENDENT ON FOREIGN FUEL!!!

Carbon Dioxide is not pollution it is what humans exhale. Next we will limit the number of children you can have because of the impact exhaling will have on the environment, which is nothing significant becuase global warming is a hoax!

WHERE DOES THE MONEY PAID FOR BY THE INDUSTRY ACTUALLY GOES? YOU CAN BET IT WON'T GO TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT.
WHO REALLY PAYS THE COST? THE CONSUMER.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE MOVE THE REFINERIES OVERSEAS BECAUSE IT'S CHEAPER? NO ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS THERE, YOUR WORLD JUST GOT FAR MORE POLLUTED.
THINK THE U.S. NATIONAL SECURITY IS AT RISK DUE TO RELIANCE ON FORIEGN OIL? JUST WAIT UNTIL WE RELY ON FORIEGN NATIONS FOR OUR FINISHED GASOLINE, DEISEL AND JET FUEL.

HOW ABOUT MAKING SOME CHANGES THAT MAKE SOME SENSE SACRAMENTO.
OH LOOK, THERE GOES AN IDEA. DEVELOP NATURAL GAS!

Terrible poll chooses for the "No" people! AB32 will cause more job growth than hinder. As a registered republican and avid "green" supporter, more municipal regulation in regards to energy usage will help our economy. Expect greater personal health due to less pollution of all kinds, drastic increase in energy efficiency, new technologies that can be sold around the world. More leadership from our elected officials and more regulation!! I swear I'm a die hard republican too, but this is what we need.

The LA Times poll choices about pulling AB32 (The Global Warming Act) are infuriating. The only pro-AB32 stance in the poll forces the voter to agree to "never". Despite that 43% so far say hold the line on AB32 protections. Unemployment is a huge problem. Of course Sacramento should do everything in its power to reduce it. But why is cutting AB32 on the table as the only solution? That's ridiculous. Pitting unemployment against global warming action is a setup for failure. We need to be successful with both. We'll find a way. It almost reminds me of pitting education against expanding prisons. Another ridiculous equation. LA Times should be forthright about their political bias ... the wording of this poll comes off as a very cheap shot. I'd expect better of a top-notch newspaper!

What part of "Global Warming is a Hoax to begin with" don't you Enviro-Nazis understand? Kill this thing. Not just temporarily but for GOOD. This was based on a fraudulent premise and everyone furthering this thing should be prosecuted, jailed and their assets confiscated as punitive damages. These globalist jackals will not be happy until our standard of living is exactly the same as China and India. Except we are to go down to their level, not the other way around. If you green alternative energy people want to develop this crap be my guest. Just do it with your own funds and private investors like everyone else has to when a new technology comes into the marketplace. Just stay out of my wallet until you have something worth buying. I should not have to fund your business venture, nor should the government. Unless of course the "profits" are going to be communal too?

Suspending California's landmark global warming law until the state unemployment dips below 5.5% doesn't make any sense! Unemployment has only dipped that low recently once in 2001, but was not even that low during the 90's. "Suspending" AB32 really means destroying it.

Green jobs are already growing 2.5 times as fast as traditional jobs; implementing AB 32 without delay will significantly expand that figure. AB 32 is good for the economy. A recent UC study reported that California’s successful efforts to become cleaner and more efficient have saved us money and grown the economy, resulting in the creation of 1.5 million jobs with a total payroll of over $45 billion. AB 32 will encourage even more investment in energy-related research, innovation and development in our state.

California has been a leader in its efforts to fight global warming. AB 32 is helping us in this fight and at the same time transforming our economy with the power of clean energy. Don't back down now, California!

    Protect AB 32

Look, for nearly 40 years the EPA and other groups, SIERRA et al, have kept Americans from using our own domestic energy resources all in the name of supposed environmentalism. Also, a film, The China Syndrome scared Americans into believing that nuclear energy was out of bounds. And now we are being outgunned by India, Brazil,China, Russia , the rest of Europe with their use of safe tech nuclear energy. We have safe tech now for coal, oil, gas exploration and drilling and yet the enviro whack jobs with their willing allies, the Democrat Party, keep America in a weakened position. And now because of the Obama recession we need jobs too. Unleashing our energy resources and creating jobs with safe clean tech could aid America and help our enviro plans too. Let us do it and stop being so afraid of the lefty weirdoes.

I too am concerned that you provided no response option that AB32 and developing green technology are vital to California's economic future.

Imagine if California had decided to suspend our native Technology, Entertainment or Aerospace sectors to help in past recessions. Would Google even exist? Would Baliwood be today's base for TMZ? Would we all flying in Airbus?

The Green Economy is today's s strategic growth area for California with LEED certified construction, solar and weatherization amongst the emerging driving forces. Naysayers should look into next week's Green California Summit or any top state university economic report as proof.

The way the question is worded makes it seem like the responsible position is the extreme one by saying "the state's environmental laws should never be suspended". We are not talking about every environmental law here, some of which may need to be reviewed or reformed or adapted to circumstance. We are discussing a particular law AB 32 The Global Warming Solution's Act, which the state has done an excellent and inclusive job of designing for over three years. Unfortunately, we cannot negotiate with physics and chemistry because we are in economic hard times.

There is also no response to your poll indicating that AB 32 will actually help the economy and create jobs, although at least two major studies have concluded this is the case. Thanks for helping to slant the debate towards reaction rather than what is in our long term interest. Our competitors in developing renewable energy in Europe, Japan, China and India appreciate it.

Just think, CARB gave us MTBE and making sure our tires are inflated properly laws. The Enviros have their place, but geez they are not doing anything to help us. Poison our water with MTBE and waste time worrying about tire pressure. Come on! They are appointed for life. I think that needs to change. Remember that "Change is good" according to our new KING.

  • Tom Tanton - 14 years ago

The wording of this poll question is prettty slanted. AB32 is NOT about protecting the environment as it will do NOTHING to affect climate nor climate change. That's quite a bit different say than keeping toxic materials out of water supplies.
