I think the move to abolish "Col Reb' as a mascot shows a great level of immaturity, and an effort to erase what history that can't be re-written. A shame I believe.

A poster named Cody on the Daily Mississippian student newspaper put it in perspective. He noted that school-administrators change, but Colonel-Reb is forever. The attempt to abolish the Confederate-flag had been tried before by the NAACP, Black caucus, Black Student Union, etc. and failed. A state-wide referendum approved the flag two-to-one. A subsequent attempt to abolish the slave-master mascot failed on a 94% student vote. The latest "election," summoned by newly-installed Chancellor Dan Jones, which does not even give the students a chance to vote on Colonel Reb at all, has been denounced as Soviet-style. Students are overwhelmingly voting "no," saying triumphantly that "we live to fight another day."

By the way, this same Jones, whose dismissal is being called for, ordered students to cease chanting "The South Shall Rise Again" in the stadium and the students defied him and did so anyhow. So, no matter what the "party-line" is, Colonel Reb is ubiquituous, the Rebels are unreconstructed and the flag still flies. Just the facts ma'am.

I think it was time to dump Colonel Reb. However fondly Old Miss fans remember him, they should move away from that. Look for Old Miss football recruiting to improve.
