I know that bakeries and grocery stores are leading the poll, but we have had both of these downtown and they have not worked. I cannot agree that Wegmans would do good in Genesee county. When it was Martins they had an expanded international selection that was modeled after a Wegmans when they first opened, only to scale back because we don't have the diversity to support this. I do agree that it is a nice company to work for. The problem with downtown is the parking. Businesses downtown need it to support their business, which I think is a deterrant for most people to go to some of these places. An example of this was Main St. Coffee; excellent idea but no place to park. I think before businesses can open there needs to be a plan for downtown to remedy what it's lacking to get businesses back in.
The community would benefit from Tops turning into Wegmans. I haven't personally experienced the Tops employee policies, but I know Wegmans are one of the best companies to work for in the world! They give strong health insurance benefits and treat their employees with respect. Also, their internationally rated culinary school could be a great opportunity for our youth who are interested in pursuing a career in the culinary arts. It would be a great asset to the community.
