Kevin Smith vs. Southwest Airlines. What do you think?

These obese monsters are not only a nuisance to normal passengers , they are a menace to safety , and would dangerously impede an emergency evacuation
The Southwest policy should be even stricter and enforced by the FAA industry wide ...A passenger airplane is not a cargo carrier for oversized freaks .

I'm an overweight "average" American adult and I fit in one seat. It may not be totally comfortable, but it's cheap, fast and safe. Fat Bob is a selfish egoist who is milking this for all the publicity he can. I've been squashed by his ilk, and that is not fun. Thank you SWA for thinking of ALL your customers and removing him. He knows he's fat. He buys 2 seats, so he should be limited to flights with those two seats available.

Way to go, Silent Bob!! I'm average weight/height, but really tired of paying to be treated like cattle. For a few hundred dollars, you get 17 inches of the most uncomfortable space ever created, half a drink, and an attitude. My LAPTOP SCREEN IS 17 INCHES! I don't know too many grown men who could comfortably fit in a space that size!! Where else would one PAY for service like this?
If the airlines are going to have a weight/size policy in place, it should standardized so that it can be made available prior to getting on the plane.

Smith's overweight - waaay overweight, not morbidly obese (a different problem altogether). He "typically purchases two tickets" to fly, ergo, had to know a standby seat was what it says - a singular seat. And then he's surprised he doesn't fit and is asked to leave? Puh-ease. Oh, wait - this alleged "brilliant" director has another movie coming out - when? Ah. Seems his ego needs as much fodder as his belly does.

He flew back on a later Southwest flight, he'd flown on their planes dozens of times, and he was able to comply with the requirements of having his armrests down and seatbelt buckled. What the airline personnel did was completely unwarranted, it was nothing but a bully's tactic of picking on the fat kid. If he really was too fat to fly, why wasn't he kicked off of any of those other flights? It was a stupid move by the Southwest employees involved, and an even stupider move by Southwest management to try to sidestep this with statements attempting to minimize what was done and even "bend" the truth of the matter.

Terrible customer service by the Wal-Mart of the skies.

and how sad for all these individuals who have to comment about fat boy this or fat boy that or to just put down that fork....stupid comments!! It isn't always about overeating or eating the wrong things. Yes...a lot of times it IS about that, but it could also be a medical condition causing the heaviness. I don't know what Kevin's problem is (whether it's medical, psychological, or just loves to eat), but whatever it is, he has the monetary funds to correct it if he wanted to (he is one step ahead of a lot of overweight people), and if he chooses not to correct it, then there is no reason to back him on this or any other overweight issue. And the individuals making the fat people comments should take a step back and take a look at their own imperfect lives before criticizing others. And no.....I am NOT an overweight person. I've just learned to NOT throw stones at glass houses. I am not perfect so how can I say anything bad about someone else who isn't perfect.

These were stupid choices for the poll and didn't even come close to what actually happened. Kevin bought 2 seats for his original flight (which large people have to do) then decided he wanted to fly stand by in order to take an earlier flight. That stand by flight would have been a single ticket/single seat which was not possible for him so they denied him that seat. I don't blame SWA for sticking to their rules and denying him that seat. It could have been a safety risk for Kevin AND the other passengers. Maybe an additional poll selection should have been that 'Silent Bob' should have remained silent and taken the hint to use some of his money to try to loose a couple pounds. I know....losing weight isn't that easy to do, but other heavy set people don't always have the luxury of having lots of money to help them.

if kevin smith ever had to sit next to someone as fat as he is, he might feel different about the whole thing. i had to sit next to some obese people over the years and it always makes a long flight seem longer and even more uncomfortable. if he didn't eat so damn much, he could save enough money to fly first class.

  • Cure is StopEating - 14 years ago

Come on, fat is disgusting, especially when oozing over the armrest next to you. Go Southwest! Best company ever has my business forever. And fat people - STOP EATING!!! This is under your control folks, stop blaming the world, and if you can't stop then pay for a few seats and own your weight.

  • maria barcelo - 14 years ago

That really sucks they just wanted to be jorks. Please i seen bigger on plains are they crazy, so lets make big sturdey plains for fat people and lets make the little skinny people pay for them.

  • andie - 14 years ago

Kevin Smith and all the other "wide-sized" people need to get a clue. Those of us who get stuck in the seat next to you don't appreciate sharing the seat we paid for with your excess girth. Further, Mr. Smith you should be able to afford your own GD plane by now.

  • maida - 14 years ago

It is so unpleasant being forced to sit next to someone in an airplane seat who is spilling over into your seat as well. I've had this experience and had to sit squashed for hours as far over to the other side as is possible which isn't very far. Safety aside, why should other passengers have to suffer when someone is too large to fit into one seat?

  • Ottosmom - 14 years ago

I wonder how many of those who voted to not fly SWA even travel.

Just like Smith, I purchase tickets based on price and convenience. I will continue to fly SWA because they provide great service and don't charge a bunch of hidden fees.

He got his 15 minutes of fame and now it's time he puts on his really big boy pants and gets over it.

  • Leonard - 14 years ago

Who does this TUB think he is? I don't know if I've seen any of his films but I'll make sure I don't see any in the future. Nobody wants to sit next to a fat guy on a plane, let alone someone as obnixous as this porker. Next time buy 2 tix or ride with the cargo or livestock. "HOORAY" for Southwest Airlines. I always fly with them when I can. NO baggage charges tells me that they want my business and care about their customers.

  • bea wolfe - 14 years ago

Give me a break. When did he become a "famous director"? All this publicity is giving him the PR that he needs to make himself "famous". SW is a great airline and they have had this policy for a very long time. I hate it when someone extends over to my seat. He is fat and he admits it. Don't we have better news than to feed this story.

  • Henry - 14 years ago

This is all absurd. Kevin Smith is nothing but a publicity hog. If this had been any other overweight person, no one would care. He's not an advocate for overweight fliers, as he's already indicated he typically buys two tickets to accommodate his size.

I don't know about any of you, but I don't buy my seat to share any portion of it with some overweight person in the seat next to me.

This is nothing more than "huffing and puffing" for the sake of his own ego. He's fat. He's indicated he's fat by buying two tickets and then opting to try and fly stand-by on an earlier flight. The airline was completely within its right to move him to a different seat or to another flight entirely.

I have previously enjoyed Mr. Smith's films. Unfortunately, due to his crybaby antics, I will not waste another cent of my money on him. I hope his little display has been worth it.

(And all you people that voted in support of Smith. Will you make the same fuss the next time a fat person plops down next to you on a plane or advocate for their "rights" as vigorously as you are supporting Smith?)

  • Fill - 14 years ago

I voted #2 because the first flight he was on stand-by so only had one seat. It was cool for SWA to let him immediately fly on the regular flight because he had two seat tickets! Was this not the case?

  • sick-of-it - 14 years ago

This is what's wrong with the scenario. Overweight got tossed off the flight. Fatter than overweight got to fly. We treat morbid obesity like a disability. It is not. Put down the fork and step away from the plate already!

  • Kristine - 14 years ago

Keri is right! Kevin Smith is an immature fat pig who needs to grow up and lose weight. Sure SWA could have handled it better but does concern over safety make them wrong? Who cares who Smith is? He is a young morbidly obese man. Put down the cupcake Kevin and stop showing everyone what a twit you are.

  • Amanda - 14 years ago

The second question on your poll is bogus. The reason he got on the second flight soon after is because Smith had already purchased himself TWO seats on that flight, knowing full well that he was too fat for one seat. He was trying to fly stand-by on an earlier flight, in one seat, when he got booted.

  • Mel - 14 years ago

Keri, commenting without the facts of the situation shows your complete ignorance. Yes, Southwest issued a so-called “apology”. However, that apology included incorrect statements issued as facts. Southwest did not actually apologize. They immediately went into CYA mode with statements that skated around the truth.

  • Keri - 14 years ago

IF SWA made a mistake, they have already issued an apology. Keeping up the barrage makes Kevin Smith a bit of a twit with his tweets. He comes off as the totally immature one. Get over it already. And for the blind sheep that are saying they will not use SWA until things are made right...do we really believe they were going to anyway? Okay...so you're going to "throw your weight" behind the man who happens to be "throwing his weight around." Smart people! Must have been a really slow news day!
