For me safety comes first, especially if I am by myself (even then I always tell at least one other person where I will be and what time I should return home). The great outdoors is a big part of my life and I want to ensure that I'm around to hike/bike/ski/kayak/camp another day.

I think it's extremely important to not just think in terms of human attackers when in nature. I use to be a huge hiker and camper and I love the outdoors. But I was bitten by a tick and have been very ill for 18 years. Lyme disease is a very serious illness. Prepare yourself with knowledge!
