"A coke, please, but could I have just the can, no cup?" Nearly as per the above recommendation, this is the way to go, I think. Much less spill-prone, and I like to stay awake and be productive on my routine short flights.
Hint for the beverage cart: Ask for "a coke, please," and the flight attendant will give you a cup of coke. Ask for "a can of coke," and most of the time they will give you the whole can, with a cup to pour it into. Try it out :)
