Thank you everyone for overwhelming response to The Poppies Handmade Ceramics Poll. We're just in the process of tabulating all the results. Please note that this poll was intended to be a vehicle to highlight handmade artist's works; we will be awarding The Poppie's (People's Choice) award to the most popular handmade artist (we will be excluding any non-handmade items).

WOW. The attacks on Heather for voicing her opinion are scary. I do agree that painting on pre-made bisque ware is very different from crafting from clay. Certainly not less of a craft, but a different one and probably should not have been in the same category. However this whole poll is kind of meaningless since it's just a measure of how many friends anyone has who were willing to vote. The most significant (and frightening)aspect of this whole thing is the hostile, personal attacks on Heather. Completely rude and uncalled for. Come on. Take a deep breath and calm down.

I could see the protest if this were an elite contest judged by more than a popular vote, but sheesh ... winning here just means you had more friends voting, it doesn't mean you are better for worse than the others.

Maybe it would have been better to quietly suggest to the officials of this contest about having two categories rather than to come here and publicly comment and come off as unprofessional ... JMPO

Have to agree with heather and specialist. think the response to an honest opinion tends more towards over-reaction.
this poll seems more like high school politics than honest assessment of value.
sorry if this offends, am hoping there is a juror who carries more weight here than the popular vote.

I guess I keep hoping that people can tell the difference between something that is hand-made/ fine craft. That people would then choose and value what has been made by hand, seeing the integrity, time & effort, style and historical significance of that work as more valuable than just the business of making and selling an object. I'm sorry I let my opinions get the best of me but that's just how I feel. I also realize that it's just a silly popularity contest.

I think it is pretty petty to get so bent out of shape over entries that only paint on pre-made items. There is art to painting too ya know!!

So if someone paints on a canvas, but didn't make the canvas, they are less of an artist?! Sure you get double creative credit when you make your piece and paint it too, but come on now ... this is not some elite contest worth picking apart like in such a way.

If you think you are better then show it in your work, but bashing others to make yourself look good only does the opposite IMPO.

Wow, thanks Heather for linking your comment to your site so I know if I see your site again to not buy from you. I can't believe how rude that was.

I love that serendipity crafts is topping the list!
    Go Serendipity!
This is a silly poll anyways.

  • Apalled - 14 years ago

Wow, talk about 4th grade all over again. Grow up people. I'll gladly vote for Serendipity Crafts AGAIN - as I have done business with them and they have gone above and beyond for me and my needs.

I wouldn't want to do business with an attitude like yours anyway.

  • heather - 14 years ago

'ditto' to what the 'specialist' said. There are some amazing artist in the list who create work that is regarded as 'high craft'. To be put in the same category as someone who paints on ceramics is an insult.

  • specialist - 14 years ago

I have to say that, as a ceramic artist, I object to the inclusion of businesses like Serendipity Crafts in a "Handmade Ceramics" poll. Purchasing mass-produced wares and hand-painting them is NOT the same thing as hand-making ceramics. I think you should have limited this list to people/businesses that actually make their pieces...and as is evidenced by the inclusion of many SUPERB ceramic artists, there are plenty of them! I'm disappointed.

Arthur Halvorsen Ceramics makes exceptional and fun ceramic pieces that remind me of cakes and frosting and make me hungry just looking at the piece that i own. yeah arthur and a million votes for him (if i could!!)

  • Brian McCormick - 14 years ago

One of Brooklyn's most hardworking "mom-and-pop shops" (Amy and Jim) at www.perchceramics.com make exceptionally high-quality ceramics with personality and heart and I am proud to vote for them!
