Shiela, you are right on. This is Big Brother at its worst. I guess we would also have to outlaw the car audio system and require that kids be sedated prior to trips. Good judgement cannot be mandated by govenment, particularly since it has little of that commodity itself.

Are you guys serious? Do you really think you can pass laws and make everyone perfectly safe? My car was totaled and I was injured by a woman who was talking to another passenger and not paying attention. Should we outlaw talking in cars? I will take my freedoms, take my chances, and act responsibly myself. I don't need a large government to force me to do it. There is a huge difference between what people SHOULD do and what we want the LAW TO REQUIRE by force. One day one of these laws will be one you don't like and you will realize this was a bad path to take.

If everyone would pull over when they need to make a call or text there wouldn't need to be a ban. Of course, there is always someone who will think it can't happen to them. I nearly ran off the road texting one day and that stopped me. Good thing about it was all that would have been hurt would have been my car & a speed limit sign (i was doing about 20 mph in a 25). So, yeah, I guess banning all cell phone usage would be a good thing - but what about emergencies like someone is following you or you're the subject of road rage? Then a cell phone would be necessary.
