Other. Yes, there should be an army, but not with conscription. Other ways can be found to encourage young people to consider taking a turn in the army. The Americans, for example, have managed to recruit a sizable all-volunteer force by tying military service to university opportunities both during and after enlistment.

For a vast country like India, role of armyis also equally important, but not a huge army, we have already reduced to a million personnel now.
But need of internal security has gone up, Present Police structure is unfit, could not win the confidence of masses. Total overhaul is required . Also there is a great need that all civilian security personnel are retired on army pattern, i.e. at the age of 40 around, this will bring cleanliness in the system and more and more employment to youngis.

Even with our nuclear deterrence, we need to have a very strong conventional defence force. With lesser and lesser possibility of a nuclear conflict, the conventional army strength(air force and navy included) will be the deciding factor in the safety of our country. With the economic growth of our country, we need to protect it. And only our effective conventional defence capability will be able to achieve that.
A compulsory defence assignment to our young population will also help inculcating discipline amongst the younger generation, without which a true nation building will be a mirage only.

In today's world, the most effective deterrent of a nation state is its ability to bring the enemy to its knees ASAP without giving UN a chance to intervene. And candidly it is the conventional firepower and not the "Nuclear weapons" that will fit the bill. So I think the army is one of essential elements for a nation's peaceful coexistence in the world.

I would like to make NCC training as compulsory for all students, in light of our past experience our defences and our defence capabiliteis are not sufficent to meet the threat even either of our archy rival Pakistan it is very bitter but true. Our frontal vulnerability from Pak as well from china is very intensified. I stongely recommended to make our defences more advanced. Once we are secure from our both neighbouring countries we could plan true development works. Our 7 lacs of security forces are employed in J&K alone, inch by inch we are losing our terriroty in hand of china either it is in Ladakh region, Barahuti Plain in Uttarakhand or Samdranchu (Near Twang) in Arunanchal Pradesh. Why this all happening this all is due to lake of our defence preparadeness. Politically it is evoked that India is capable to face the multiple threat from our all fronts but in reality picture requires a more contribution and advancement of our security systems. Standing Army of China is nearly 70 lac more advanced Air force and missiles systems have been develop by them. Being a PM it is main trust area to give our people peace and that could be only given when we assured that ours all vulnerabilties has been secured.
