Would you turn Lesley's first page? Be tough. Comments help the writer.

This writer sounds like P.G. Wodehouse or H.H. Munro, or even James Thurber. If she is not trying to write humor, she should. Their stories don't follow the typical short story 'cook book' style. Often the reader is allowed to wander in to a crazy situation, rather than be 'hooked' on the first page. I would have liked to read more. I would advise her to read the writers mentioned, if she hasn't already done so. She writes like a 'Brit'. It is not necessary to hate any character, or expect disaster or serious conflict in this type of story. Keep it up.

I chose to say yes. While I agree completely with everything that was said. But I found something in the text that suggested the possibility of conflict. If not immediate conflict, delayed conflict and the satisfying falling of some upper-crust high-society person. That kind of dry sarcastic theme always makes me want to read more.

I would say that some of the sentences were not completely understandible on the first reading. I had trouble mostly because I missed the set up of location along with the characters. I would have like there to be mention of a location and maybe some dialogue leading to a conflict or assumption of potential conflict.

I was impressed enough to want to turn to the second page but would not read past that if I was given no reason to like or hate the character or felt no impending disaster or conflict either real or implied.

I was intrigued by the setting and the characters. Despite some flaws, I definitely would like to read on.
