Are You NIMBY About Windfarms?

Would someone like to tell us how the negatively affect the health of people around them???

The survey question for the "yes" answer is mis-leading IMO ("Yes, they are noisy and can affect the health of people near them") and most likely skewed the poll results. While noise may be one of the downsides to wind power, most people opposed to wind turbines consider the destruction of scenic views and the killing and mutilation of birds (animal health, not human health) to be more of their NIMBY issue. Reliability, or lack thereof, is another. Is wind power part of the green energy "solution"? Certainy. But not as "green" as they're made out to be.

My wife and I are fortunate enough to live in a secluded oceanfront home in New England, and, given a choice, are very happy with our horizon the way it is, BUT....., would much prefer to see a non-polluting, non-consuming, wind farm gracing our shoreline than a cancer spewing, coal fired generation plant, with it's fuel coming by fuel guzzling, polluting, trucks or train, or ships, from once beautiful mountains, now with the tops blown off to get at the coal, or, equally as bad, the ever threatening shadow of a nuclear reactor, and it's indisposable, spent fuel rods, looming on the horizon with it's attendant horrors and security threats.

Regardless of windfarm siting, the threat of environmental harm is minimal if any, and a terrorist attack would accomplish what,..... other than inconvenience?

Given our insatiable, and ever increasing thirst for electricity, it's way past time for us to embrace the only known technologies that will allow us to indefinitely, and safely continue to indulge our burgeoning electrical appetites. A worldwide combination of wind, solar, and hydro power could save us from our selves.

As a very wise little possum named Pogo once said, "we have met the enemy, and he is us"!

Is it just me or do other people actually like the look (and obviously what they represent) of wind turbines?

I love them. I loved the old wind powered water pumps and I love wind turbines too. Put one up in my back yard any day.

I live in Illinois, As far as I am concerend you can put wind turbines up all over around here. They really don't bother me here. That said, I understand why people on scenic places such as Western NC, Colorado, or within sight of the beach etc. don't want them. No body wants to go the the grand canyon and look at wind turbines, but there are plenty of places where they really wouldn't bother many people. We need to find the happy medium, even if it means that some of the "best locations" in terms of power production are turbine free zones, and we have to put more in less than optimal locations.

Actually went and stood right under a 500kW turbine pushing ~200kW into the grid. Not silent, but not audible over the radiator fan of our car as we pulled up 50 yards away for example!
