The only thing they are going to do with CVSA 2010 is drive the experienced drivers out and bring in a bunch of new, unexperienced drivers, that will only stay in the industry a couple years on average and leave because they don't like the lifestyle.

Sometimes I wonder if they don't do these things just to keep the pay down, because they know they don't have to pay new drivers anything, and can control them easier than they can older, more experienced drivers.

PLEASE READ THIS AND HELP ME IF YOU CAN!

My name is Randy Winston. I live in Amherst Va. I'm 53 years old. From 1978 until 2008 I made my living being an OTR Truck Driver. For 16 years I also helped my Father operate our fleet of trucks that we had leased to a company while driving full time. I have been around trucks all of my life. I'm experienced with all aspects, to some extent, with trucking including maintenance.

On June 29 2008 I was had my only accident in over 30 years and 4,000,000 miles of safe driving. I nodded off to sleep for a second at the wrong place at the wrong time. As soon as the right front wheel slipped off the pavement I was able to regain control of the truck however, there was a water washed out gully on the shoulder. When the front axle of the short 3 axle trailer that I was pulling ran through the gully it caused the entire rig to lean to the right and lay over on the side. My right knee was injured upon getting out of the truck and I had to have surgery. Following the surgery I went through several weeks of therapy to get my knee strong enough to return to work.

The Doctor released me for full duty on November 16 2008. For several weeks before my release I was on light duty and helped out around the office. I did some filing, entered logs into the computer, answering the phone, going to pick up parts for the shop. Anything that anyone needed help with I did it while also going to my therapy sessions.

During those weeks the steel business was declining and since my main job was picking up and delivering scrap iron to steel mills by the time I was ready to go back driving our company had a big lay off and I was included.

Understand this. For almost 10 years I worked for this company and we always had plenty of work. We all worked close to 70 hours a week. Rarely did we catch a break and when we did we were glad to get it. No one saw this lay off coming including the owner of the company.

This put me in a particular situation that I wasn't aware of until I started calling around trying to regain employment. No one could hire me! Why? Because I had that accident on my record

I started receiving unemployment money in November of 2008 and now its February of 2010. Although I have filled out countless applications and made an untold amount of phone calls I am still unemployed. No one will hire me.

During this time I have lost about everything that I had. I have always had a good credit score, well over 800. Now, I can't pay my bills. I've been forced to sell a piece of land that's been in our family for over 200 years. I had another piece of land that I bought for an investment to help out when I retired. I lost that through foreclosure to the bank. I'm having to sell my wife's car. That's the worst part. I hate for my wife to have to give up things that she enjoys.

Trucking companies are taking people the streets that have never been inside a truck before. Training them for a very short time and turning them loose on America's highways everyday. They would rather do that than hire someone like me.

I know that having an accident is a serious matter. Being an Owner Operator for several years I've had trucks of my own involved in accidents. I would like to know how many drivers that have had accidents similar to mine have actually had another such accident to follow.

Nodding at the wheel is an awful thing. But, whose to blame for it? It happens to the best of us. I would much rather have an accident like that than to simply loose control while using a cell phone or picking up something off the floor.

Achieving 4 million miles without an accident is a rare thing and I'm proud to have been blessed in such a way. I was going for 5 million. No one was more disappointed than I.

I've collected unemployment for 14 months. Insurance companies are keeping trucking companies from hiring me. But, they train new drivers for 4 weeks and turn them loose everyday. How safe is
