The 2nd generation Prius was sort of edgy for its time. But by now it is definitely dated, like most other designs from 7 years ago. The 2010 design is once again a very edgy look. Most cars at the cutting edge of design tend to be polarizing but there is no doubt this is a really well sculpted car. And it really stands out from the run of the mill family cars like camry, accord, malibu, fusion, etc. I found a sketch from 1983 of a Ford concept car that looks incredibly like the latest incarnation of the Prius. I think its design is right for the time.

My husband and I both drive Prius, his is a 2003, mine is a 2005. Every time someone says its ugly, I laugh as I pass them at the gas pump. Every time we think we need our truck, the hatchback comes through for us. Function and efficiency, that's what should count!

When I saw the first models of the Prius, I thought they looked pinched on the ends. At that time, I thought they were ugly. However, when I bought my 2007 Prius, they didn't look so bad.
If you look at a Prius as an aerodynamic vehicle, it is really pretty cool. You can see, by its design, how it slips through the wind. I smile every time I see one now because there goes another environmentally conscientious human being. = )

Who cares what it looks like. If that is what is most important, then we are all going the way of the dodo. Our tombstone will read: Vain, stubborn, and outdated. Get a clue.

To me it's not so much ugly as cheap looking, like a low-cost outdated 70s left-over. I never have liked hatchbacks and the front end is especially odd looking. The only ones I have ever seen in person have been colours I don't think very tasteful for cars (red, bright blue).

Aesthetics or taste dictated by the mass? That's as bad as an automotive design assessment from BusinessWeek. That's why we have furniture by Lazy Boy. I would much rather hear what the design critics have to say. Personally, I find the design of the 2rd generation a tremendous improvement over the 1st; the 3rd generation slightly better than the 2nd. Design wise, none is a winner although we have to keep in mind that the Prius is an exercise in function much like the geodesic dome isn't designed as an object of beauty.
I think it is beautiful. I just picked up my new 2010 red Prius yesterday and I love it!

I think that it is the most beautiful car on the road today. I hope to have one in my driveway by year's end.

Look, it is an aerodynamic hatchback, and that is what it looks like. Form follows function. If Prius becomes it's own line, it could improve. If someone wants to drop a much cooler-looking Tesla Roadster off, I'll drive it.
